Local Knowledge

Why locals fish this spot

Ashfield Flats is the largest surviving river-flat in metro Perth — mud, saltmarsh, paperbark snags, and residential pontoons visible across the river at Ascot. It's classic upper-Swan bream country: soft-bottom habitat with plenty of structure, light boat pressure, and a walkable foreshore that rewards anglers casting tight to snags.

How to fish this spot

Walk the bank and work unweighted soft plastics into the snags and overhanging paperbarks — upper-Swan bream hold tight and won't chase. For bait, prawn or mulies on a light running-sinker rig on a making tide. Dawn and late afternoon are prime. Mulloway in warmer months take snelled 6/0s on mulie fished to bait schools after dark.

Common catches

Black bream (the main target, year-round, best in warmer months when they push onto the flats), flathead (summer, along the sand-to-mud edges), estuary cobbler (year-round, muddy shallows at night), and mulloway (Oct–Mar, opportunistic this far upstream).

Access and tips

First cast counts — anything that lands clumsy spooks the hole. Don't wade into the saltmarsh; it's protected habitat. Swan-Canning cobbler are subject to size (430 mm min) and bag (8) limits and periodic seasonal closures — verify current DPIRD rules; handle with care.

Access & Conditions

Getting there

Ashfield Parade parking is tight; Sandy Beach Reserve 500m upstream has proper parking, public toilets and BBQs and is the better entry for a longer session. Walking trails along the foreshore are sealed in places and dirt elsewhere — get muddy in winter and not mobility-friendly throughout. No formal lighting; head torch needed for dawn or dusk sessions. Public transport is feasible: Ashfield train station is 600m walk.

How it fishes

Upper-Swan position — tannin-tinged water year-round, more brackish than salt, with subdued tidal influence compared with the lower river. Easterly mornings are calmest; the spot sits low so winds funnel down the river corridor. Heavy winter rain pushes fresh water and silt down from the upper Swan and can turn the flats murky for days. Algal blooms periodically affect the reach in summer heat — check DBCA/DPIRD advisories before eating fish.

Hazards

Trails are muddy in winter and slippery; sturdy footwear matters. Three urban drains empty into the flats and the reach has had recurrent algal blooms plus a documented 2021 blackwater fish kill — check DBCA/DPIRD advisories before eating fish, especially after heavy rain or in summer heat. Snakes are present in the saltmarsh through warmer months; stick to cleared paths. Mosquitoes and sandflies at dawn and dusk are intense; pack repellent.

Gear & Rigs

Bream: 7ft 2–6lb spin gear with 4–8lb fluoro leader (not heavier — bream see leader in the clear margins), 1.5–2.5 inch unweighted soft plastics in motor oil or pumpkin worked tight to snags. Suspending hardbodies in 35–50 mm work well for accurate snag-edge presentations. Bait alternative: prawn or mulie strip on a small running sinker with a 4 or 6 hook on light leader. Mulloway (warmer months): 6–8kg setup with snelled 6/0s on whole mulie.

Seasons

Black bream are year-round but peak in the warmer months (October–April) when they push onto the flats to feed. Summer flathead push this far upstream from late November through April along the sand-to-mud edges. Mulloway are an October–March fishery here — opportunistic rather than reliable. Cobbler at night year-round (subject to closures). Tarwhine and herring along the clearer margins year-round.

Frequently Asked

Is it safe to eat fish from Ashfield Flats?

Check DBCA/DPIRD advisories before consuming any fish. The reach has had recurrent algal blooms and a 2021 blackwater fish kill. Three urban drains empty into the flats. The spot fishes well for catch-and-release; eat-and-keep depends on current advisories.

Where do I park for Ashfield Flats?

Ashfield Parade has limited parking. The better option is Sandy Beach Reserve 500m upstream — proper parking, toilets and BBQs, and a short foreshore walk back to the productive flats.

What's the best lure for upper-Swan bream?

Unweighted 1.5–2.5 inch soft plastics in motor oil or pumpkin worked tight to snags, or 35–50 mm suspending hardbody minnows. Light leaders (4–8 lb) and accurate first casts matter more than fancy lures — the bream are wary.

Can I keep cobbler from Ashfield Flats?

Cobbler are subject to specific Swan-Canning size and bag limits (minimum 430 mm, daily bag 8) and periodic seasonal closures — verify current DPIRD rules before keeping any. Handle with care if releasing; the dorsal and pectoral spines deliver a painful sting.
