Is it safe to eat fish from Ashfield Flats?

Check DBCA/DPIRD advisories before consuming any fish. The reach has a history of algal blooms and blackwater events, and a mass fish kill hit the lower Swan in September 2025. Three urban drains — Woolcock Court, Chapman Street and Kitchener Street — discharge into the flats. The spot fishes well for catch-and-release; eat-and-keep depends on current advisories.

Where do I park for Ashfield Flats?

Ashfield Parade has limited parking. The better option is Sandy Beach Reserve 500m upstream — proper parking, toilets and BBQs, and a short foreshore walk back to the productive flats.

What's the best lure for upper-Swan bream?

Unweighted 1.5–2.5 inch soft plastics in motor oil or pumpkin worked tight to snags, or 35–50 mm suspending hardbody minnows. Light leaders (4–8 lb) and accurate first casts matter more than fancy lures — the bream are wary.

Can I keep cobbler from Ashfield Flats?

Estuary cobbler carry a 430 mm minimum and a daily bag of 8 (shared with catfish), with no closed season — verify current DPIRD rules before keeping any. Handle with care if releasing; the dorsal and pectoral spines deliver a painful sting.
