Local Knowledge
Beaumaris is the bay's garfish hot spot, and the little wharf beside the Beaumaris yacht club is where land-based anglers chase them. Whiting school up in good numbers here and respond to berley, and the squid fishing is often best through winter. Offshore, salmon schools regularly push through Beaumaris Bay. The Ricketts Point Marine Sanctuary lies to the south-west and is no-take, so mind which way you cast.
Garfish want a fine, steady berley trail, a quill float and tiny long-shank hooks — the run-in tide is best. Whiting respond to the same berley with small baits on the bottom. For calamari, work jigs over the weed edges in clear water, especially on winter evenings. Salmon are a cast-and-retrieve job with small metals when they show. Garfish are all mouth and no patience; strike late and fast, and expect to miss the first few.
Garfish are the specialty (no minimum, combined bag 40). King George whiting (27 cm, bag 20) and calamari (squid combined bag 10) are the other main targets, with salmon (21 cm) and pinkies (28 cm) as bonuses. Skates and rays can't be taken within 400 m of the wharf.
Ricketts Point Marine Sanctuary starts about 700 m to the south-west and runs from Table Rock to Quiet Corner, about 500 m offshore, marked by boundary posts — all fishing and bait collection is banned inside, so stay east of the boundary posts and never fish toward or inside the sanctuary. Parking right at the wharf is for yacht club members, so park on Beach Road and walk. The Beaumaris aquaculture reserve has been inactive and open to fishing since December 2024. Yacht-club members get the parking; garfish don't check membership cards.
Access & Conditions
The wharf sits below Beach Road at Beaumaris, beside the yacht club and boat ramp, with the Beaumaris Beach Foreshore Reserve behind. Public parking is along Beach Road and nearby streets; the walk down to the water is short but sloped. The wharf is small and slippery, with anglers casting close together — not ideal for a big family group.
Beaumaris faces south-west into the bay. Calm, clear days with a light northerly or easterly suit garfish, whiting and squid, while a strong south-westerly makes the wharf wet and the water dirty. Winter evenings are the squid window.
A small, slippery wharf with tight casting room — mind your neighbours' lines and wear grippy shoes. Boats use the adjacent ramp; keep clear of launching. The sanctuary boundary is close: fishing inside it carries heavy penalties. Wet rocks either side are slippery.
Gear & Rigs
Garfish: a 6–7 ft light rod, 1000–2000 reel, 4–6 lb line, quill float, size 10–12 long-shank hooks with prawn, maggots or dough. Whiting: paternoster with size 6–4 long-shanks on pipi or squid. Calamari: size 2.5–3.0 jigs. Salmon: 15–30 g metals.
Seasons
Garfish run from late spring into winter, peaking in the warmer months. Whiting are best November to April. Squid fishing is strongest in winter and through the April-to-October window. Salmon pass through from autumn into spring. The cliffs behind the wharf are famous for their fossils; the garfish are younger and considerably livelier.
