What fish can you catch at Wybung Head?

Mulloway (jewfish), yellowtail kingfish, bonito, tailor, Australian salmon, and rock blackfish (drummer) and luderick in close. Eastern blue groper live on the ledges but cannot legally be targeted or kept. It's primarily a live-bait and float rock-fishing headland, best on calm, low-swell days. A NSW Recreational Fishing Fee is required to fish anywhere in NSW, including here, and the receipt must be carried.

Can you fish for blue groper at Wybung Head?

No. Eastern blue groper has a bag limit of zero in NSW, and the line fishing prohibition was continued for a further three years from 1 March 2025, so it runs to 1 March 2028. If you accidentally hook one, release it in the water. Groper still hold thickly on Wybung's ledges, so expect to meet them.

Do you need a lifejacket to rock fish at Wybung Head?

Yes. The Central Coast local government area is declared under the Rock Fishing Safety Act 2016, so an approved lifejacket is required by law at the high-risk rock-fishing locations the council has declared, and these swell-exposed ocean ledges are squarely what the law is aimed at. Adults need AS 4758 level 50S or greater and children under 12 need level 100, correctly sized and in good condition, and a $100 on-the-spot fine applies for going without. The rule also covers children and anyone helping you fish.

How do you get to Wybung Head, and what does it cost?

Follow the road to its end inside Munmorah State Conservation Area, where there is a clifftop car park. The park charges $8 per vehicle per day, payable by card at the machine or via the Park'nPay app, and the gate is open 5.30am to 9pm from the September school holidays until 1 May, then 5.30am to 7pm from 1 May until the September school holidays. From the car park it is a short walk to the clifftop and a scramble down to the ledges. There are no toilets at the head — the nearest are at the Frazer Beach picnic area and campground nearby.

Can you fish Wybung Head after dark for jewfish?

Only if you plan around the gate. The park gate shuts at 7pm from 1 May until the September school holidays and 9pm for the rest of the year, so a true all-night session means leaving the car outside the park and walking in. Most regulars fish the run-up into dusk instead, which is a genuinely productive mulloway window, and are back at the car before the gate closes. The NSW mulloway limit is one fish per person at 70cm or longer.

When is the best time to fish Wybung Head?

Summer into autumn for kingfish, bonito, tailor and salmon on spun metals and floated baits; autumn and winter for mulloway in the last of the light on a moving tide. Across every season the real decider is swell — fish it on settled days under about 1.5m and avoid it entirely when the swell is up. Dawn, dusk and the run-up tide are the most productive windows, and the summer gate hours give you the most room to use them.
