Where is Lucy's Wall at Swansea and how do you get to it?

Lucy's Wall is the southern breakwall at the Lake Macquarie entrance, a few hundred metres inside Swansea Heads. Park at Reids Reserve off Lambton Parade, Swansea Heads — there are public toilets and picnic tables, and it's a short, flat walk to the wall, which makes it one of the more accessible breakwalls on the coast.

What can you catch at Lucy's Wall Swansea?

It's best known for luderick (blackfish) through winter and bream and whiting over the warmer months, with dusky flathead, silver trevally and tarwhine also caught. The entrance current also brings tailor, Australian salmon, the odd kingfish and mulloway past the rocks — mulloway are 70cm minimum with a bag of 1 per person, and tailor 30cm with a bag of 10. You'll need a NSW Recreational Fishing Fee to fish here unless you're exempt.

Do you have to wear a lifejacket fishing the Swansea breakwall?

Yes. Lake Macquarie is a declared rock-fishing area under the Rock Fishing Safety Act 2016, so a lifejacket is compulsory when you fish with rod, line or handline from naturally occurring rock exposed to ocean swell here, and the duty covers anyone helping you and any child under 12 in your care. Adults need AS 4758 level 50S or greater and under-12s level 100, and a $100 on-the-spot fine applies. Wear one on this wall regardless — the channel current, not the swell, is what drags people seaward here.

What's the best tide for fishing Lucy's Wall?

The turn of the tide either side of the run-in is the classic window, ideally into low light at dawn or dusk. The channel current is the main driver here — luderick floats run best with the tide along the inside of the wall, and bream and whiting fire on the new-moon prawn runs from spring through autumn.

When is luderick season at Swansea?

Luderick start pulling floats towards the end of May and run through winter, often holding into November. Fish green weed or cabbage under a float with a sand-and-weed berley. In NSW luderick have a 27cm minimum size and a bag limit of 10, which is 20 in possession, and a Recreational Fishing Fee is required.
