Can you catch kingfish from the rocks at Middle Head?

Yes — Middle Head is one of Sydney Harbour's better land-based kingfish platforms. The fish hold on the northern end where the reef meets sand as they pass between the ocean and the harbour, and live squid jigged from the kelp at your feet is the standout bait. Best chances are dawn and dusk on a tide change from late spring through autumn. You'll need a NSW Recreational Fishing Fee to fish anywhere in NSW, including here.

Do you need a lifejacket to rock fish at Middle Head?

Yes — wear one. Middle Head is exposed to ocean swell and anglers have been swept from Sydney headlands, so a lifejacket belongs on every session here: an adult jacket to Australian Standard AS 4758 level 50S or greater, and level 100 or greater for anyone under 12. Fish with a mate, wear cleated or felt-soled boots, and stay off the lower ledges when there is any swell about.

Is it safe to eat fish caught at Middle Head?

Middle Head sits east of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, so the milder dioxin advisory applies: NSW Health recommends eating no more than 150g per month of fish and crustaceans caught in this part of the harbour. The strict no-eat rule applies only to catch taken west of the bridge. Many anglers here fish catch-and-release for that reason.

What's the squid fishing like at Middle Head?

Very good. The kelp beds at both ends of the platform hold southern calamari year-round, with heavier numbers through the cooler months. Work a 2.5–3.0 jig slowly over the weed, and any squid you catch double as the best live bait going for the kingfish that patrol the northern reef edge.

Can you collect cunjevoi or bait off the rocks at Middle Head?

No. The whole Sydney Harbour foreshore, including Middle Head, is an Intertidal Protected Area where collecting cunjevoi, shellfish, crabs, nippers and other intertidal animals is prohibited. You can still fish and bring bait with you up to NSW bag limits — you just can't lever it off the rocks on site.
