What fish can you catch at Jibbon Beach Bundeena?

Sand whiting, yellowfin bream and dusky flathead on the sand through the warmer months, and Australian salmon and tailor along the beach and around the point as the water cools from autumn. Silver trevally and bream hold near the rocks year-round. A NSW Recreational Fishing Fee is required to fish anywhere in NSW, including here, and the receipt has to be carried while you fish.

How do you get to Jibbon Beach to fish?

It is at the eastern end of Bundeena, about 1.5 km on foot from the Bundeena wharf, or a short walk from the streets near Neil and Loftus Streets, where street parking is limited. Reach Bundeena by car through Royal National Park, which charges $12 per vehicle per day, or by the ferry from Cronulla, a crossing of about half an hour. There are no toilets or facilities on the beach itself.

Do you need a lifejacket to fish the rocks at Jibbon Point?

Yes on the swell-exposed ledges. The Sutherland Shire is a declared rock-fishing area under the Rock Fishing Safety Act 2016, so a lifejacket is compulsory when you fish with rod, line or handline from naturally occurring rock exposed to ocean swell here, and the duty covers anyone helping you and any child under 12 in your care. Adults need AS 4758 level 50S or greater and under-12s level 100, and a $100 on-the-spot fine applies. The Jibbon ledges are oyster-covered, slippery and swell-exposed, so watch the swell before stepping onto any low ledge and never fish the rocks alone.

Dawn and dusk on a moving tide are the reliable windows year-round. Fish the warmer months (October–April) for whiting, bream and flathead on the sand, and the cooler months (April–September) for salmon and tailor along the beach and around the point. A moderate swell that cuts a clear gutter fishes better than a dead-flat day.

What's the size limit for dusky flathead at Jibbon Beach?

Dusky flathead in NSW have a slot limit of 36 to 70 cm — release anything under 36 cm or over 70 cm — with a daily bag of 5 and 10 in possession. Sand whiting are 27 cm on a bag of 20 shared across the whiting, tailor 30 cm on a bag of 10, yellowfin bream 25 cm on a bag of 10 shared with tarwhine, and Australian salmon carry no minimum size at all on a bag of 5. A NSW Recreational Fishing Fee is required to fish here.
