Can you fish off Captain Cook Bridge in the Georges River?

Not from the bridge deck. Transport for NSW policy treats fishing from its road bridges as prohibited, so the traffic deck is out — but the foreshore directly beneath and beside it on both banks is open, popular land-based fishing. The bridge carries grade-separated shared footpaths and cycleways along both of its sides, and those are not fishing platforms either. Foreshore shared paths run under the bridge from Sans Souci Park on the north-western side and Cook Park toward Dolls Point on the south, giving access to the rock edges, concrete platforms and the oyster-covered pylons. Like everywhere in NSW, you need a current NSW Recreational Fishing Fee to fish here unless you hold an exemption.

What fish can you catch at Captain Cook Bridge?

Yellowfin bream are the mainstay year-round, alongside silver trevally, tarwhine, dusky flathead, luderick in the cooler months and sand whiting on the warmer flats. The deep water around the pylons also holds school mulloway, best targeted at night — the NSW minimum is 70 cm and the bag is one fish per person — and the occasional yellowtail kingfish patrols through summer at 65 cm with a bag of 5. It fishes best on the run-out tide when bait gets flushed past the structure.

What's the best tide for the Georges River bridges?

The run-out tide is the standout — the water around the Georges River bridges, Captain Cook and nearby Tom Uglys included, consistently fishes better as the tide falls and bait is washed past the pylons, and at both it is the banks you fish from, not the deck. Aim to start around the top of the tide and fish the first few hours of the run-out, ideally in low light at dawn, dusk or after dark for the bigger fish.

Is it safe to eat fish caught at Captain Cook Bridge?

It sits in the Botany Bay and lower Georges River zone, downstream of the Tom Uglys bridge, where the NSW PFAS Taskforce issues precautionary dietary advice. Australian salmon from Botany Bay are catch-and-release only as a precaution. Mulloway are capped at two servings a week for adults and one for children aged two to six, silver trevally at five and three, and tailor at six and three, while dusky flathead and luderick carry caps for young children. Follow the bag and size limits too — bream 25 cm on a bag of 10 shared with tarwhine, dusky flathead a 36 to 70 cm slot with a bag of 5, and mulloway 70 cm with a bag of one fish per person.

Is there parking and toilets at Captain Cook Bridge for fishing?

Yes. The bridge sits at the southern end of Cook Park, with car parking, public toilets and a flat, sealed foreshore path at Sans Souci Park and along the Dolls Point foreshore. Most fishing spots are a short, level walk from the car, though stepping down onto the rock edges and platforms is uneven and not suited to wheelchairs or prams.
