Do you need a permit to fish or drive on Birubi Beach?

To fish, you need a NSW Recreational Fishing Fee — it is required to fish anywhere in NSW, saltwater or fresh, and costs around $7 for 3 days, $14 for a month, $35 for a year or $85 for three years. Walking on at Birubi needs no permit, but the dune drive into Worimi Conservation Lands needs a separate Worimi vehicle permit, bought online or locally at Anna Bay. An annual NSW National Parks pass does not cover Worimi Conservation Lands, so it will not get you onto the sand. The two are unrelated, so cover both if you plan to drive and fish.

What can you catch at Birubi Beach?

The surf gutters produce tailor in autumn, Australian salmon through winter, mulloway after dark, plus sand whiting, yellowfin bream and dusky flathead on fresh bait. The Birubi Point rock platform adds rock blackfish (black drummer), bream and the occasional snapper. Pipis and beach worms can be collected on the beach itself and are the standout baits for whiting and bream.

Do you have to wear a lifejacket to fish the Birubi Point rocks?

Yes. Port Stephens Council's map marks Birubi Point as one of a series of declared high-risk rock fishing locations along the ocean coast between Birubi Point and Tomaree Head, so a lifejacket is compulsory when you fish with rod, line or handline from naturally occurring rock exposed to ocean swell here. The duty covers anyone helping you and any child under 12 in your care, adults need AS 4758 level 50S or greater and under-12s level 100, and a $100 on-the-spot fine applies.

When is the best time to fish Birubi Beach for mulloway?

Fish for mulloway after dark, casting a fresh mullet or tailor fillet into a gutter mouth and letting it soak, ideally around a tide change overlapping low light. The cooler months from autumn through spring produce the steadiest run of school jewfish. Get set up before dark and be patient — it rewards a long soak over constant casting.

What size mulloway and flathead can you keep in NSW?

In NSW the mulloway minimum length is 70cm with a bag limit of 1 per person, and a boat limit of 2 per boat per day when two or more people are aboard. Dusky flathead sit in a 36 to 70cm slot — keep fish in that range, release anything over 70cm, with a bag of 5. Tailor are 30cm with a daily bag of 10, which is 20 in possession, and Australian salmon have no minimum size and a bag of 5.
