What fish can you catch at Bellambi breakwall?

Off the wall and Bellambi Point you'll mostly land tailor, Australian salmon and bonito on metals, plus yellowfin bream and silver trevally around the rocks and dusky flathead off the harbour sand. Small kingfish and luderick show seasonally, and squid come off the ramp. A NSW Recreational Fishing Fee is required to fish anywhere in NSW, salt or fresh.

Do you need a lifejacket to fish the rocks at Bellambi Point?

Yes. Wollongong is a declared rock-fishing area under the Rock Fishing Safety Act 2016, so a lifejacket is compulsory when you fish with rod, line or handline from naturally occurring rock exposed to ocean swell here, including the natural rock either side of the harbour. Adults need AS 4758 level 50S or greater and under-12s level 100 or greater, the duty extends to anyone helping you fish, and the fine is $100 on the spot. Wear one on the breakwall too — the wall and the platform adjoin, and the swell that washes one washes the other.

Is there a boat ramp and parking at Bellambi Boat Harbour?

Yes. There is a concrete council boat ramp, a sealed carpark, toilets and a picnic area beside the reserve, and the same area is a popular spot for squidding. The walk from the carpark out to the wall is short and flat.

When is the best time to fish Bellambi for tailor and salmon?

Fish the run-in tide around dawn or dusk for the best bite. Tailor are about most of the year and chop hardest from autumn into winter, and Australian salmon peak over the same cooler window from autumn into spring. Bonito are the summer pelagic. Flick chrome metals into the wash and watch for birds working baitfish.

What's the legal size for flathead at Bellambi?

Dusky flathead in NSW have a 36–70cm slot limit with a bag limit of 5 — you must release any fish over 70cm, as the big breeders do most of the spawning. Always confirm current sizes and bag limits with NSW DPIRD, and remember the NSW Recreational Fishing Fee applies.
