Local Knowledge

Why locals fish this spot

Yanchep Lagoon is arguably one of the most productive shore fishing spots in the Perth metro area. The lagoon is protected by an outer reef that creates a natural fish trap — bait schools up in the calm water, tailor and whiting patrol the reefy edges, and the whole setup fishes like a country spot that happens to be 30 minutes from the CBD.

How to fish this spot

Cast metal slugs and poppers over the reefy patches for tailor — they sit in ambush around the reef edges and smash anything that looks like fleeing bait. For whiting, use small poppers or minnow lures worked over the sand between reef patches. The lagoon's protected nature means lighter tackle and smaller lures work better than heavy surf gear.

Common catches

Tailor (strong numbers over the reef, the main draw), KGW and sand whiting (sand patches between reef, reliable), herring, occasional salmon when autumn schools reach this far north, and snook on jigs at first light. Skippy in the wash.

Access and tips

Fish dawn or dusk weekdays for the best experience. During abalone season, licensed abalone fishing is popular here. The reef provides natural berley. Walk the lagoon to find the most active section.

Access & Conditions

Getting there

Sealed car park at Yanchep Lagoon foreshore reserve immediately behind the lagoon. Sealed paths from car park to the upper beach access — partial mobility access. Public toilets, beach showers, kiosk in season and BBQs at the main reserve. The lagoon walls are sealed limestone in places; productive reef-edge positions still require some scrambling. No formal lighting; head torch needed for dawn or dusk sessions. Parking fills extremely fast on summer weekends.

How it fishes

West-facing protected lagoon inside an outer reef. The reef takes the brunt of incoming SW swell; lagoon water stays calm and fishable in conditions that shut down open beaches. Easterly mornings are calmest. Afternoon Fremantle Doctor blows across but the lagoon stays manageable. Water clarity is generally excellent inside the lagoon; reduces only in extreme storm conditions. The reef edges fish best on tide changes when current pushes bait through.

Hazards

Limestone edges are slippery; watch footing especially near the wash zones. The reef edges can wash in extreme conditions; respect swell warnings. Bluebottles drift in during summer northerlies. Sharks transit the area but have not historically affected fishing safety inside the lagoon. Patrolled swimming hours apply in summer — the lagoon is a popular family swimming spot; back-cast carefully and respect swim zones.

Gear & Rigs

Tailor: 9–10ft rod, 15–25lb braid, 25lb fluoro, 30–40g metals or small poppers worked over reef edges. KGW and sand whiting: light 4–8lb spin with surface lures, small minnow lures, or lightly weighted prawn baits on a long-shank #6 paternoster — small surface presentations are particularly effective on the lagoon flats. Herring: 7ft 6–10lb spin gear with paternoster #6 hooks. Lighter tackle than typical metro rock fishing — the protected lagoon doesn't need heavy gear.

Seasons

Tailor are the year-round headline with peaks autumn through summer. Australian salmon push through in autumn (March–June) but the lagoon catches them less reliably than open beaches further south. Herring are year-round with summer peaks. KGW and sand whiting hold year-round on cleaner sand patches. Snook are a summer first-light surface fishery. Abalone (licensed) is a separate seasonal activity.

Frequently Asked

Why is Yanchep Lagoon so productive?

The outer reef creates a natural fish trap — bait schools up in the protected calm water, and tailor and whiting patrol the reef edges. The structure-and-shelter combination is uncommon for a metro-accessible spot, and the reef provides natural berley as waves wash food off the rocks.

When is the best time for tailor at Yanchep Lagoon?

Dawn and dusk on a moving tide year-round, with peaks autumn through summer. Cast 30–40g metals or small poppers over the reef edges and retrieve fast — tailor sit in ambush and smash anything that looks like fleeing bait.

Is Yanchep Lagoon kid-friendly?

Yes — protected lagoon water, beach amenities including kiosk and toilets, and a productive light-tackle fishery suit families well. Fishing dawn or dusk avoids peak swimmer times. Surface lures for whiting are a fun visual fishery for kids.

What's the best lure for whiting at Yanchep Lagoon?

Small surface poppers or minnow lures worked over the sand between reef patches. The visual takes are part of the appeal. The lagoon's calm water suits surface presentations more than at open beaches.
