Local Knowledge
Woodman Point Jetty sits close to the open water of Cockburn Sound with cleaner water than the inner harbour spots. The weed beds in this area hold squid, and the jetty structure gives land-based anglers access to deeper water than most beach spots. Less crowded than nearby Ammo Jetty, and the surrounding regional park makes a session feel like a small escape from the city.
Fish the pylons and drop-offs for herring and skippy during the day. At night, work squid jigs along the weed edges — the calmer water here means you can fish lighter jigs than at more exposed spots. Tide changes lift the bite noticeably. For KGW, fish a light paternoster on the sand patches just off the structure.
Herring, skippy, squid (over the weed beds, particularly at night), tailor on dusk, and bream tucked in around the structure. King George whiting on the sand patches. Garfish work the surface in calm corners. Snook turn up on jigs at first light in summer.
If Ammo Jetty is packed, Woodman Point Jetty is the quieter option nearby. Light tackle and clear water mean finesse presentations do better than heavy gear. If the wind is strong, fish the sheltered side of the structure. Don't fillet on the jetty boards — gulls move fast and the smell carries.
Access & Conditions
Park at the Woodman Point Recreation Camp or the regional park car park, then walk a sealed 200–400m path to the jetty depending on which entry you use. The jetty is heritage timber, sealed and railed, mobility-friendly for most of its length. Public toilets at the camp and regional park; none on the jetty itself. No formal lighting on the jetty so a head torch is essential for after-dark sessions. Parking is generally easier than at Ammo because the parks are larger; still fills on weekends.
Sheltered position inside Cockburn Sound, similar to Ammo but slightly more exposed to NW conditions. The afternoon Fremantle Doctor blows directly across the spot but the sound stays fishable. Tide changes drive the squid and tailor bite; slack water is slow. Water clarity is generally good and slightly cleaner than Ammo because of the nearby open-water flush. Reduces after winter storms or strong northerlies.
Heritage timber boards have nail heads in places — check footing in the dark. The jetty creaks and shifts in big seas; on heavy swell or strong westerly days, the outer end is uncomfortable. Bluebottles drift in during summer northerlies. The pylon structure will snap leaders and lose jigs. Stingrays cruise the sand around the jetty; watch your feet in the shallows.
Gear & Rigs
Squid: 2.5–3.0 jigs in pink, orange or natural worked slowly along the weed edges; lighter jigs (2.0) work in calm conditions. KGW: 7ft 4–8lb spin gear with a long-shank #6 paternoster on prawn, bloodworm or small mulie strip over sand patches. Herring and skippy: same light spin gear with a paternoster on prawn or maggot. Tailor: 9–10ft rod, 15–20lb braid, ganged-hook mulies or 20–40g metals at dusk.
Seasons
Squid is reliable from August through February with peaks in spring and late summer. Tailor push through in autumn (March–June). KGW are a September–April fishery. Herring and skippy are year-round with summer peaks. Snook are a summer first-light surface fishery. Garfish hold year-round in calm corners.
If this spot's blown out
- Ammo Jetty (Ammunition Jetty, Woodman Point) — Walk-distance south for the same Cockburn Sound squid water with more lighting and more crowds.
- Coogee Beach — Surf beach south for sand-fishing when you want to spread out.
- South Mole (Fremantle) — Drive 15 minutes north for rock-wall fishing when you want bigger species and deeper water.
Frequently Asked
Same Cockburn Sound water and similar species mix, but Woodman Point is generally quieter and slightly cleaner because of the nearby open-water flush. Ammo has better lighting and more crowds; Woodman trades both for a calmer session.
Yes — the sand patches around the jetty hold KGW from September through April. Fish a long-shank paternoster with prawn or bloodworm on light gear, away from the immediate pylon line.
Yes for squid and tailor, but bring a head torch — there's no formal lighting on the jetty itself. The regional park surrounding it is safe but quiet at night.
The Woodman Point Recreation Camp car park is closest. The regional park car parks are slightly further but generally have more space. Both are sealed and a short walk to the jetty entry.
