Local Knowledge

Why locals fish this spot

Walpole sits in the South Coast Bioregion between Augusta and Albany, surrounded by tall karri country and two connected estuaries that share a single ocean bar. Nornalup Inlet is the larger and saltier of the pair and has a long-standing reputation for producing big black bream; Walpole Inlet behind it is shallower and tannin-stained from the Frankland River. Coalmine Beach and the Knoll caravan park sit on the inlet edge as the practical bases. Mandalay Beach is the open Southern Ocean side, named for the 1911 shipwreck and one of the cleaner surf-fishing beaches on the south coast.

How to fish this spot

Inlet bream: light spin gear with small soft plastics or hardbodies worked tight to the snags around Newdegate Island and the river-mouth edges, especially the run-out into dusk. Cobbler: paternoster rigs with prawn or fresh squid fished after dark from the Coalmine Beach jetty and the deeper holes — they bite best in the warmer months but turn up year-round. King George whiting and yellowfin: walk the shallow sand flats on a rising tide with bait or surface lures. Mandalay Beach surf: gutters and channels close to shore for salmon and tailor on metals or ganged mulies during the autumn run, with mulloway after dark on whole baits.

Common catches

Black bream (the headline — Nornalup is genuinely a big-bream fishery), cobbler from the inlet at night, King George whiting and flathead off the flats, herring, skippy, garfish, squid, plus salmon and tailor from Mandalay Beach in autumn and mulloway from the bar and the surf.

Access and tips

The Nornalup flats once held a sight-cast bream fishery; that is rarer now but the fish are still there for anglers prepared to walk and stay quiet. Cobbler are nocturnal — the post-dusk window is when most are caught, not the middle of the day. Check the Walpole and Nornalup Inlets Marine Park zoning before fishing; sanctuary zones do exist and are marked on shore and water.

Access & Conditions

Getting there

Walpole township is around 4.5 hours from Perth via the Albany and South Western Highways, all sealed. Coalmine Beach has a sealed access road, a caravan park and shore access onto the inlet. The Walpole town jetty and the Knoll provide additional land-based options. Mandalay Beach is 25km west of town through D'Entrecasteaux National Park on a sealed road, with a sealed car park and a long stair walk down to the sand. Town has fuel, a small supermarket, a tackle outlet and pubs. The Frankland River mouth is reached from the inlet by boat or kayak.

How it fishes

The two inlets are estuarine and stay fishable in almost any weather thanks to their shape and the sheltering hills. Mandalay Beach faces south-west into the full Southern Ocean and washes out fast in any sizeable swell. The bar at the inlet mouth is shallow and shifts with storms; small-boat access to the open sea is conditional and not casual. The morning land breeze is the calmest window. Tannin colour in the upper inlets after winter rain doesn't shut the bream down but does change lure choice towards darker patterns.

Hazards

Mandalay Beach is fully exposed Southern Ocean — sets lift without warning, the beach has no sheltered corners, and rip currents run strongly through the gutters. The inlet itself is benign by comparison but the bar should be left to people who know it. White sharks are present along this stretch of coast; the south-coast sighting frequency is lower than Esperance but the species is genuinely there. The town and its surrounds are also remote enough that mobile reception drops out — tell someone where you're fishing. Tiger snakes are common in the inlet fringes through the warmer months.

Gear & Rigs

Bream: 7ft 2–6lb spin with 4–6lb fluoro leader and small plastics, hardbodies or blade lures, fished tight to snags. Cobbler: 7ft 6–10lb gear with a paternoster, #1 to 1/0 hooks and prawn or fresh squid bait. Whiting and flats: 7ft 4–8lb with a long-shank #6 paternoster or surface lures on the rising tide. Mandalay Beach surf: 11–13ft rod, 25–40lb braid, 30–50lb leader, 40–80g metals or ganged-hook mulies for salmon and tailor; step up for mulloway with whole baits on a 6/0 single. Squid: 2.0–2.5 size jigs over the weed beds.

Seasons

Walpole is in the South Coast Bioregion, so the West Coast September 2027 demersal closure does not apply here — South Coast bag and size structure runs separately. Black bream fish year-round with a warmer-months peak. Salmon move past Mandalay Beach March through July, slightly later than west-coast spots. Tailor overlap with the salmon run. King George whiting are most reliable September through April. Cobbler bite year-round but better in the warmer months.

Frequently Asked

Is the Nornalup Inlet really that good for bream?

Yes. Nornalup has a long-standing reputation as one of the better black-bream estuaries in Western Australia, with quality fish around Newdegate Island, the Frankland River mouth and the deeper snag lines. Light gear, small presentations and clean casts to structure are the local approach.

Can I drive a boat through the bar to the open sea?

Sometimes, depending on swell, recent storms and the current shape of the bar. The opening is shallow and shifts, and it is not a casual passage — locals who know the bar pick their windows carefully and most visitors fish the inlets instead. If you have not crossed it before, treat the bar as a hazard rather than an option.

Does the West Coast demersal closure apply at Walpole?

No. Walpole sits in the South Coast Bioregion, which has its own bag and size structure for demersal scalefish and is not subject to the West Coast September 2027 closure. Verify the current South Coast Bioregion rules with DPIRD before targeting any demersal species.

When do salmon hit Mandalay Beach?

The autumn migration window through this part of the south coast runs roughly March to July, peaking April and May. Time the run with a settled forecast — Mandalay is fully exposed and washes out in any sizeable swell, so the fishable days inside the run are the ones that matter.
