Local Knowledge

Why locals fish this spot

South Beach is a wide stretch of sand just south of Fremantle that catches swell from the west and forms gutters and holes after decent seas. It's an underrated surf fishing spot because most people drive past it to reach the moles or Ammo Jetty, which means less pressure and more fish per angler. The walking-distance South Beach Cafe and dog-friendly southern section keep it social without crowding the productive fishing windows.

How to fish this spot

Walk the beach at low tide and look for gutters carved by recent swell — darker water, breaks in wave pattern, or channels draining between sandbars. Fish these features with fresh bait on a running sinker or cast metals through on the retrieve. Dawn is the best window before the sea breeze kicks in. For salmon in autumn, run-and-gun with metals as schools push past close to shore.

Common catches

Herring (year-round in gutters), tailor (autumn runs at dawn and dusk), Australian salmon (Mar–Jun when schools move through), KGW and sand whiting in clean sandy gutters, and mulloway in deeper night gutters. Skippy in the wash close in.

Access and tips

Morning sessions are almost always better. If the gutters are flat and featureless, try another day. Don't leave bait or fish frames; the gulls move fast.

Access & Conditions

Getting there

Sealed car parks at South Beach Reserve and along Marine Terrace. Sealed paths from car park to the upper beach access — partial mobility access. Public toilets, beach showers and the South Beach Cafe at the main reserve. Dog-friendly southern section attracts pedestrians and pets. No formal beach lighting; head torch needed for dawn or dusk sessions. Parking generally easy outside summer weekends. The drive from central Perth is around 25 minutes.

How it fishes

West-facing exposed beach catching incoming SW swell. Fishes well in swell up to about 2.5m. Easterly mornings are calmest; afternoon Fremantle Doctor blows directly onshore and shuts the beach down by 11am most summer days. The gutters reshape after each significant swell event. Salmon runs in autumn benefit from cleaner-water easterly weather.

Hazards

Big swell sets can wash anglers in low gutters; stay back in heavy seas. Stingrays cruise the gutters; shuffle if you wade. Bluebottles drift in during summer northerlies. Sharks transit the area but have not historically affected fishing safety. Patrolled swimming hours apply in summer; don't fish swim zones. Dog-friendly southern section means unleashed dogs are common; back-cast with care.

Gear & Rigs

Tailor and salmon: 9–11ft rod, 15–25lb braid, 25lb fluoro, 30–40g metals or ganged-hook mulies. Herring: 7ft 6–10lb spin gear with paternoster #6 hooks, fished close to gutter edges. KGW and sand whiting: light 4–8lb spin with a long-shank #6 paternoster on prawn or bloodworm. Mulloway: 10–12kg setup with 4–6 oz running sinker and whole fresh squid or live mullet in deeper night gutters.

Seasons

Australian salmon are the autumn headline (March–June). Tailor overlap with salmon season and continue through summer. Herring are year-round with autumn peaks. KGW and sand whiting hold year-round in cleaner sandy gutters. Mulloway are an October–April night fishery.

Frequently Asked

Why is South Beach less crowded than nearby spots?

Most anglers drive past it to reach the moles or Ammo Jetty. The trade-off for the missed reputation is less fishing pressure and more fish per angler. The South Beach Cafe and dog-friendly section keep it social without crowding fishing windows.

When does South Beach fish best?

Dawn before the sea breeze kicks in. March through June for salmon and tailor. Easterly mornings are calmest. The gutters reshape after swell events; walk the beach to find defined features before committing.

Is South Beach safe to fish at night?

Yes for the sandy beach sections in manageable swell. Bring a head torch — there's no formal beach lighting. Stick to gutters you've scouted in daylight and don't fish low gutters in heavy swell.

What's the best lure for South Beach?

30–40g metals on a fast retrieve through gutters for tailor and salmon. Walk the beach to find a defined gutter close to shore, then fish it. Heavy gear isn't needed for the bread-and-butter species.
