Local Knowledge

Why locals fish this spot

Safety Bay is a deep, protected bay that holds good numbers of King George whiting in the warmer months — a species that's harder to find at most metro beach spots. The sheltered water and seagrass beds create ideal whiting habitat, and squid move through seasonally. When the salmon schools push in close during autumn, the bay mouth can fire.

How to fish this spot

For King George whiting, use long shank hooks with fresh bait (beach worms or small prawns) fished over the sandy patches between weed beds. Keep rigs light — these fish are line-shy in clear water. For squid, work jigs along the weed edges at dawn and dusk. When salmon show, switch to metals and work them fast through the schools.

Common catches

King George whiting (the main draw, Sep–Apr), squid (over weed beds), herring, sand and yellowfin whiting on cleaner sand, flathead on sand edges, garfish on calm days, and Australian salmon in autumn when schools push into the bay.

Access and tips

Polarised sunglasses help you spot fish and weed beds from the shore. If the whiting aren't on the sand, they're tucked into the weed edges — target the transition zone. Don't drag through seagrass; lift gear clear.

Access & Conditions

Getting there

Multiple sealed car parks along Safety Bay Road and adjoining streets with beach access points spaced 200–500m apart. Sealed paths from car park to upper beach access — partial mobility access; the wading positions are not. Public toilets at the main reserves. Cafes, restaurants and a tackle shop in nearby Rockingham (5 minutes' drive). No formal beach lighting; head torch needed for dawn or dusk sessions. Parking generally easy outside summer weekends.

How it fishes

South-facing protected bay with seagrass beds creating ideal whiting habitat. Sheltered from prevailing westerly weather. Easterly mornings are calmest and produce best for sight-fishing. Water clarity is generally excellent in the bay year-round; reduces only after winter storms. The bay's deep protected nature means it fishes through almost any conditions short of a strong easterly gale.

Hazards

Stingrays cruise the shallow flats and sandbank edges; shuffle when wading. Bluebottles drift in during summer northerlies. Boat traffic in the bay is moderate; keep long casts clear of moving vessels. The bay can fog in on calm winter mornings; tell someone your plans if fishing remote sections solo. Cockburn Sound algal blooms periodically affect the area; check DPIRD advisories before consuming fish.

Gear & Rigs

KGW: 7ft 4–8lb spin gear with a long-shank #6 paternoster, baited with beach worms or small prawns. Light leaders (4–6 lb fluoro) suit the clear water. Sand and yellowfin whiting: similar light spin with surface lures or lightly weighted prawn baits. Squid: 2.0–3.0 jigs along weed edges at dawn and dusk. Salmon (autumn): 9–11ft rod with 15–25lb braid and 30–40g metals on a fast retrieve. Light gear is the local game.

Seasons

King George whiting are the headline (September–April) on the sandy patches between seagrass. Sand and yellowfin whiting are October–April on cleaner stretches. Squid runs August–February with peaks in spring and late summer. Australian salmon push through in autumn (March–June) when schools occasionally push into the bay mouth. Herring are year-round with summer peaks. Flathead fish best late spring through summer.

Frequently Asked

Why does Safety Bay produce KGW?

Deep protected bay with seagrass beds creates ideal King George whiting habitat. The sand patches between weed are where they feed; sight-fishing on calm sunny days is the local skill. Most metro beach spots don't have the depth/seagrass combination that Safety Bay does.

What's the best bait for KGW at Safety Bay?

Beach worms or small prawns on a long-shank #6 hook fished over the sandy patches between weed beds. Light leaders (4–6 lb fluoro) and clean presentations beat heavy gear in the clear shallow water. Fresh bait outfishes frozen.

Can I fish Safety Bay during the day?

Yes — calm sunny days are actually the productive window for KGW because sight-fishing works. Polarised glasses help spot weed beds and fish from the shore. Dawn and dusk also work but mid-morning calm is genuinely productive here.

Is Safety Bay good for beginners?

Yes for the bread-and-butter species in calm conditions. KGW require some patience and finesse but the bay is sheltered enough that conditions are forgiving. Light tackle and fresh bait are the basics; everything else is technique.
