Local Knowledge

Why locals fish this spot

Rottnest is Perth's offshore-but-not-really fishing playground — a 90-minute ferry with rod tubes across your shoulder and quokka selfie pressure behind you. The island offers clear-water reef, sheltered bays, sand-patched flats and rock ledges all within pedalling distance. Herring schools hold in Thomson Bay for family sessions; Geordie Bay mixes skippy, tailor and silver bream; King George whiting sit in surprisingly shallow water if you know where to sit; and the autumn salmon run turns the south side into a spinning man's paradise.

How to fish this spot

Start with herring, skippy and tarwhine using small baits or light jigs around the Thomson Bay jetties and Geordie Bay ledges. A berley cage to get bait deeper brings King George whiting, skippy and silver bream into play — the shallow Rotto bays can produce surprisingly big King George. Walk or pedal to Ricey Beach, Cathedral Rocks, Radar Reef or Little Armstrong Bay for tailor, squid and reef species. Salmon in autumn off the south-side beaches with metal slugs.

Common catches

King George whiting (shallow bays with berley), herring (Thomson Bay / Geordie Bay), skippy and silver bream (reef edges), tailor (cooler months into the ledges), squid (Aug–Feb around the weed), autumn salmon schools, and pinkie snapper from deeper rock ledges in the cooler months.

Access and tips

Bring more water than you think. Daylight fishing is prohibited at The Basin, Little Parakeet Bay and Pinky Beach — evening only. Don't disturb the quokkas; respect the wildlife and don't feed them.

Access & Conditions

Getting there

Ferry access from Fremantle (B Shed), Hillarys Boat Harbour, or Perth city — multiple operators and ferry schedules. Bikes and rod tubes are the standard transport on-island; bike hire available at the Thomson Bay precinct. Sealed paths around Thomson Bay; bike trails to outer bays. Public toilets at major bays. Cafes, bar, accommodation and bait/tackle in the Thomson Bay village. No vehicle access for visitors. Plan around ferry schedules — first ferry over, last ferry back.

How it fishes

Island position offshore from Perth means clearer water than mainland metro spots; the reef structure shelters bays from worst swell. Easterly mornings are calmest. Afternoon sea breezes blow up most days. The south side of the island is fully exposed to SW swell; the north side and bays are more protected. Salmon runs in autumn use the south-side beaches. Water clarity is excellent year-round; reduces only briefly after winter storms.

Hazards

Five Marine Sanctuary Zones are no-take: Kingston (Thomson Bay shipwrecks), Parker Point, Green Island, Armstrong Bay and West End Demersal. Fish outside them — check the Rottnest Island Authority sanctuary map. No spear fishing, no nets. South-side rock platforms get genuinely big swell; never fish low ledges in heavy seas. West Coast demersal closures apply to pink snapper and dhufish — verify current dates with DPIRD. Sun exposure on the island is intense; pack sunscreen, hat and water.

Gear & Rigs

Bread-and-butter (Thomson Bay/Geordie Bay): 7ft 6–10lb spin gear with paternoster #6 hooks. KGW with berley: same light spin with a long-shank #6 paternoster on prawn or bloodworm. Tailor (ledges and reef): 9–10ft rod with 15–20lb braid and ganged-hook mulies or 30–40g metals. Squid: 2.5–3.0 jigs around weed beds. Salmon (south-side beaches): 9–11ft rod with 15–25lb braid and 30–40g metals. Pinkie snapper from deeper ledges: 8–10kg gear with whole baits.

Seasons

Australian salmon are the autumn south-side headline (March–June). Tailor are most reliable autumn into cooler months. KGW are September–April in shallow bays with berley. Herring and skippy are year-round bread-and-butter. Squid runs August–February with peaks in spring and late summer. Pink snapper from deeper rock ledges in cooler months (May–September) outside demersal closures. Silver bream and tarwhine year-round.

Frequently Asked

Can I bring my fishing gear on the Rottnest ferry?

Yes — most operators allow rod tubes and tackle bags. Check size and weight limits with your specific operator. Bait can usually be brought; some operators have restrictions, so verify before you board.

Where are the best Rottnest fishing spots?

Thomson Bay (jetties, family-friendly, herring), Geordie Bay (reef edges, mixed species), Ricey Beach and Cathedral Rocks (tailor and squid on the ledges), Little Armstrong Bay (KGW with berley in shallow water), south-side beaches (autumn salmon migration). Avoid the marine park sanctuary zones.

What can't I fish at Rottnest?

Five marine sanctuary zones — Kingston (Thomson Bay shipwrecks), Parker Point, Green Island, Armstrong Bay and West End Demersal — are no-take. The Basin, Little Parakeet Bay and Pinky Beach are evening fishing only. No spear fishing, no nets, no taking of marine life from inter-tidal zones outside permitted areas.

Do I need a fishing licence for Rottnest?

No fishing licence required for shore-based recreational fishing. Bag and size limits set by DPIRD apply. Boat-based recreational demersal fishing in the West Coast Bioregion is in extended recovery closure to September 2027 — verify current land-based rules and species closures with DPIRD before targeting pink snapper or dhufish. Check Rottnest Island Authority for any island-specific rules.
