Local Knowledge

Why locals fish this spot

Quinns Rocks is a rocky stretch of coastline between Mindarie and Two Rocks where reef and rock platforms extend from the shore. The rocks create structure that holds bait and predators in close, and the area gets less fishing pressure than spots further south because of the drive. There's an active local fishing club, which tells you the fishing is worth the trip.

How to fish this spot

Fish the wash zone over the rocks at dawn and dusk — cast metals into the white water and retrieve through the transition zone. The rock edges and channels between reef sections are prime ambush points for tailor and herring. For a less snaggy option, fish the sandy pockets between reef with bait rigs for whiting.

Common catches

Tailor (over reef in the wash, dawn and dusk), herring (reef edges, reliable), KGW and sand whiting (sandy pockets), Australian salmon in autumn, mulloway in deeper night gutters, and occasional skippy and snook.

Access and tips

Watch the swell and never fish the lower platforms when it's big. The drive from central Perth is 35–40 minutes, but the reduced pressure makes it worthwhile. Don't fish unfamiliar lower ledges in the dark.

Access & Conditions

Getting there

Sealed car park at Quinns Rocks foreshore reserve, with additional access points along the coastline. Sealed paths from car park to the upper rocks — partial mobility access; the productive lower platforms are not. Public toilets at the main reserve. No formal lighting on the rocks; head torch essential for dawn or dusk sessions. Parking generally easy outside summer weekends.

How it fishes

West-facing rock platforms fully exposed to incoming SW swell. Fishes well in swell up to about 1.5–2m on the lower platforms; above that the productive low rocks wash and the spot becomes unsafe. Easterly mornings are calmest; afternoon Fremantle Doctor blows directly onshore. The rock structure creates cross-swell that surprises anglers who don't know the spot. Water clarity is generally good outside winter storms.

Hazards

Wet limestone is slippery — proper rock fishing footwear is essential. Big swell sets can wash anglers off lower platforms; never fish low ledges in heavy swell. Bluebottles drift in during summer northerlies. Sharks transit the area but have not historically affected fishing safety. The remote night-time setting means going with a friend is sensible. Don't fish unfamiliar lower platforms in the dark.

Gear & Rigs

Tailor and salmon: 9–11ft rod, 15–25lb braid, 25lb fluoro, 30–40g metals worked across the wash. Herring: 7ft 6–10lb spin gear with paternoster #6 hooks, fished tight to reef edges. KGW and sand whiting: light 4–8lb spin with a long-shank #6 paternoster on prawn or bloodworm over sand patches. Mulloway: 10–12kg setup with whole baits in deeper night gutters. Bring spare metals; the reef snags.

Seasons

Tailor are reliable autumn (March–June) at dawn and dusk over reef. Australian salmon push through in autumn. Herring are year-round with summer peaks. KGW and sand whiting hold year-round on cleaner sand pockets. Mulloway are an October–April night fishery in deeper gutters. Snook are a summer first-light surface fishery.

If this spot's blown out

  • Mindarie Marina — Drive 5 minutes south for the sheltered marina alternative when rocks are blown out.
  • Alkimos Beach (Shorehaven) — Drive 5 minutes north for the wreck-and-beach fishery.
  • Yanchep Lagoon — Drive 15 minutes north for the protected lagoon when conditions are too rough for rocks.

Frequently Asked

Why does Quinns Rocks have less pressure than southern spots?

The 35–40 minute drive from central Perth filters out anglers looking for closer options. Active local fishing club regulars know the spot but it's not on the typical metro angler's rotation. Fewer anglers per session means more space and fish.

Are the Quinns Rocks platforms safe to fish?

Yes in manageable swell (under about 1.5m) with grippy footwear and time spent watching sets before committing to a low rock. In bigger swell or after dark in unfamiliar conditions, no — the lower platforms wash without warning.

What's the best time to fish Quinns Rocks?

Dawn and dusk on a moving tide in manageable swell. Easterly weather mornings are the most reliable. After a winter storm, give it 2–3 days for the sand to settle before expecting clean wash conditions.

Can I camp near Quinns Rocks?

Not at the foreshore directly. Caravan parks and accommodation are available in nearby Mindarie and along the northern beach corridor. Quinns Rocks is a session destination rather than an overnight base.
