Palm Beach Jetty is a solid family-friendly fishing spot in the Rockingham area. The jetty gives access to deeper water over a sandy bottom with weed patches nearby, and the pylons hold bait that attracts a mix of species. It's sheltered enough to fish in most conditions and the lighting draws squid and baitfish in after dark.

Drop baits tight to the pylons for whiting and flathead during the day. At night, work squid jigs slowly around the lit areas — the jetty lights concentrate calamari over the nearby weed beds. For herring, float a light rig along the pylon line on the tide change. Fish the sandy patches between weed for whiting.

KGW and sand whiting (the main daytime target over sand), flathead (ambush feeders near pylons), squid (after dark under lights), herring, skippy, tarwhine, garfish, and flounder in the warmer months. Tailor in autumn. Snook on jigs at first light.

Bring a long-handled net as the drop from the jetty is too high to hand-line decent fish. Simple rigs and fresh bait consistently outperform complicated setups here. Don't fillet on the boards; gulls move fast.

South-facing sheltered position inside Mangles Bay/Cockburn Sound. Fishes through almost any westerly weather thanks to the bay shape. Easterly mornings are the calmest. Tide changes lift the bite for squid, KGW and tailor; slack tide is slow. Cockburn Sound water clarity is generally good; reduces after heavy rain or strong northerlies that stir up the seagrass beds.

Boards can be slippery in heavy dew and after rain. Boat traffic in and out of the boat ramp adjacent to the jetty is constant during the day; keep lines clear. Stingrays cruise the sand around the pylons; watch your feet if you wade. Bluebottles drift in during summer northerlies. Cockburn Sound algal blooms periodically affect the area; check DPIRD advisories before consuming fish.
