Local Knowledge

Why locals fish this spot

Ocean Reef Marina provides boat launching and sheltered fishing in Perth's northern suburbs. The harbour structure holds bait year-round, and the inshore reef system nearby means land-based anglers have access to both marina fishing and reef fishing from the surrounding coastline. Less crowded than Hillarys, further north, less pressure.

How to fish this spot

Fish the harbour walls and ramp edges for herring and bream — the structure concentrates bait. On the outside, cast toward the inshore reef for tailor and herring at dawn and dusk. The entrance channel gets tidal flow that switches the bite on during the change. Light tackle and natural presentations work best in the clear water.

Common catches

Herring, bream (around structure), tailor (reef edges and entrance at dawn/dusk), skippy, KGW and sand whiting over the sand, and squid around the harbour walls at night. Snook on jigs at first light in summer.

Access and tips

Fish the surrounding reef and beach areas if marina access is limited during construction. Check current conditions before heading out — the precinct is changing fast. Don't fish the active boat-ramp lane.

Access & Conditions

Getting there

Sealed car parks at the marina precinct and along Ocean Reef Drive. The precinct is undergoing major redevelopment so access points and parking may change between visits — verify current arrangements before each trip. Sealed paths and walls in completed sections — partial mobility access depending on construction zones. Public toilets and a tackle shop in the existing precinct. No formal lighting on all walls; head torch helpful for night sessions. Parking generally easy outside summer weekends.

How it fishes

West-facing position with sheltered marina inside breakwater walls. The marina entrance gets genuine tidal flow on the change. Fishes well in most conditions thanks to the breakwater shelter; the inshore reef outside the walls becomes uncomfortable in big swell. Easterly mornings are calmest. Water clarity is generally good; reduces in days after winter storms. The redevelopment is expanding the marina, which may change current patterns over time.

Hazards

Construction zones change access and may create temporary hazards — check current arrangements and signage before each session. Walls can be slippery after rain or in heavy dew. Boat traffic in and out of the entrance channel is constant during the day; keep lines clear of the navigation channel. Bluebottles drift in during summer northerlies. Marmion Marine Park boundaries are nearby; verify before fishing reef areas.

Gear & Rigs

Squid: 2.0–3.0 jigs in pink, orange or natural worked along the walls and under any lit sections at night. Herring and skippy: 7ft 6–10lb spin gear with a paternoster carrying #6 hooks, baited with prawn or maggot. Tailor: 9ft rod with 15–20lb braid and ganged-hook mulies or 30–40g metals at dawn and dusk near the entrance. KGW and sand whiting: light 4–8lb spin with a long-shank #6 paternoster on prawn or bloodworm over sand patches. Bream: light gear around walls.

Seasons

Squid is reliable from August through February with peaks in spring and late summer. Tailor are most reliable autumn (March–June). Herring are year-round with summer peaks. KGW and sand whiting hold year-round on cleaner sand patches. Snook are a summer first-light surface fishery.

Frequently Asked

Is Ocean Reef Marina still open during redevelopment?

Generally yes, but access points and amenities change as construction progresses. Verify current arrangements and signage before each visit. Some walls or sections may be temporarily closed; the precinct is becoming a larger facility over time.

Where do I fish for squid at Ocean Reef Marina?

Along the inside walls of the breakwater, particularly under any lit sections at night. Fish 2.0–3.0 jigs slowly along the walls and over any weed patches. Calm conditions are best.

Is Ocean Reef Marina good for kids?

Yes for the completed sections in calm conditions with adult supervision. The redevelopment makes some areas variable — verify current safe access points before bringing kids.

How does Ocean Reef compare to Hillarys?

Less crowded, further north, currently undergoing major redevelopment. Hillarys has more established amenities and bigger walls; Ocean Reef has lower fishing pressure but variable access during construction.
