Local Knowledge
The Murray is Peel-Harvey's longest tributary — 134 km from the hills down to the inlet, with the saltwater and brackish reach from South Yunderup up to Pinjarra a genuine bream specialist fishery. Murray Bend at Ravenswood is the local brag: 40 cm fish and hard-fighting hits among the snags. Flats at North Yunderup pull fresh baitfish and crustaceans in on the tide. Less pressured than the Peel Inlet foreshore, and quiet enough to hear the fish crack a prawn before you see the line move.
Light gear wins the Murray. Work small soft plastics (motor oil, pumpkin, 1.5–2.5 inch) or small suspending hardbody minnows tight to snags and rock walls — suspending presentations absolutely clean up here. For flats fishing, match the tide change and drift light presentations over sand/rock/seagrass mix around Ravenswood and Yunderup. Boat or kayak helps you reach the quieter pockets; walkable access at Ravenswood and Pinjarra town.
Black bream (the headline — Murray Bend, Ravenswood, Pinjarra Flats, all bream country), flathead (sand and channel edges), mulloway (deeper pockets at dusk), yellowfin whiting on the tidal flats, and cobbler after dark for people fishing bait. Blue swimmer crabs are present at the lower end closer to the inlet.
Murray bream run big — bump your leader to 8–12 lb around snags and pull the middle treble off hard-body lures to cut snag losses. Don't fish from private moorings or jetties without permission. Light gear and finesse presentations beat heavy tackle every session.
Access & Conditions
Walkable access at Ravenswood town, Pinjarra town centre, and the Yunderup foreshore reserves. Sealed roads to all main entry points. Sealed paths along most foreshore reserves but bank fishing in many sections requires walking through grass or scrub — partial mobility access. Public toilets at Ravenswood and Pinjarra town reserves. No formal river-bank lighting; head torch needed for evening sessions. Boat ramps at South Yunderup and Pinjarra give boat-based access to the system.
The Murray is brackish for most of the productive reach, with salinity dropping as you head upstream. Tidal influence reaches up to Pinjarra but is muted compared with the inlet. Easterly mornings are calmest. Water clarity is generally tannin-tinted from the upper river systems; stays fishable in most weather thanks to the steep banks. Heavy winter rain pushes fresh water down and can shift fish into the lower brackish reaches.
Snag-rich water — bring spare lures and rigs. Steep, slippery banks at most access points; watch footing especially in wet weather. Mosquitoes and sandflies are intense at dawn and dusk; pack repellent. Snakes are present in the riverbank scrub through warmer months — stick to cleared paths. Boat traffic is moderate at weekends. Algal blooms periodically affect the system; check DPIRD advisories before consuming fish.
Gear & Rigs
Bream: 7ft 4–8lb spin gear with 8–12lb fluoro leader (heavier than standard bream gear because of snag risk), small soft plastics (1.5–2.5 inch motor oil, pumpkin, natural patterns) or small suspending hardbody minnows. Pull the middle treble off hardbodies to reduce snag losses. Flathead: same gear with paddle-tail plastics on the sand edges. Mulloway in deeper pockets: 6–8kg setup with whole baits at dusk. Whiting on the flats: 4–8lb spin with light prawn baits.
Seasons
Black bream are the year-round headline with peaks in spring (September–November) and autumn (March–May). Flathead fish best late spring through summer. Mulloway are caught year-round in the deeper pockets with most reliable sessions late summer through autumn. Yellowfin whiting are an October–April fishery on the tidal flats around Yunderup. Cobbler at night, year-round (subject to DPIRD closures). Blue swimmer crabs at the lower end during the warmer months.
If this spot's blown out
- Coodanup Foreshore (Peel Inlet) — Drive west to the Peel Inlet for shallow flats wading and crabbing in the same system.
- Herron Point (Harvey Estuary) — Drive south to the Harvey Estuary side for the bush-camping estuary alternative.
- Mandurah (Foreshore / Jetty area) — Drive 30 minutes west to the Mandurah foreshore for sheltered urban fishing.
Frequently Asked
Murray Bend at Ravenswood is the local brag — 40 cm fish among the snags are caught regularly. The flats around North Yunderup are also strong. Pinjarra town reach holds bream year-round. Light gear and small soft plastics or suspending hardbodies are the standard approach.
No — Ravenswood, Pinjarra and Yunderup all have walkable bank access to productive water. A boat or kayak helps reach the quieter snag-rich pockets but plenty of bream are caught from shore.
Small suspending hardbody minnows worked tight to snags clean up here. 1.5–2.5 inch soft plastics in motor oil, pumpkin or natural patterns also work well. Bump leaders up to 8–12 lb because of snag risk; pull the middle treble off hardbodies to reduce losses.
Cobbler are subject to seasonal closures and bag limits set by DPIRD; check current rules before keeping any. Handle by the line and snip the hook close on any release — the spines deliver a painful sting.
