Bite Compass is showing a low fish activity bite score on 8 Dec 2025. Wind is around — at —. Solunar feeding windows are listed below.
Local Knowledge
Mindarie is a smaller marina north of Hillarys that fishes better than its size suggests. The rock walls hold squid and herring, and the entrance channel gets genuine flow on the tide change. It's less crowded than Hillarys and a solid fallback when conditions are rough on the open coast. The walking-distance dining precinct (Dome, Indi Bar etc.) makes it a civilised after-work option.
Work the entrance channel during tide changes — this is where flow concentrates bait and fish follow. The inside walls are better for squid at night, especially where weed growth provides cover. Keep lures and baits tight to the rock structure. Cast parallel to the walls rather than straight out for best results.
Herring, skippy, squid (particularly over weed patches at night), tailor around the entrance, bream along the walls, garfish in calm corners, and snook on jigs at first light. Tarwhine in the calmer pockets.
Fish the sheltered side when wind is up. Watch for boat wash from vessels entering the channel — it can snap light leaders if you're not paying attention. Don't fish from the dining boardwalks; signage applies and waitstaff will move you.
Access & Conditions
Sealed car parks at multiple foreshore access points around the marina precinct. The closest to productive walls are at the eastern boat-ramp car park. Sealed paths along the walls and foreshore — among the more mobility-friendly fishing spots in Perth's far north. Public toilets, cafes, restaurants and a tackle outlet within 200m of any productive spot. Lighting is good across the precinct so evening sessions don't need a head torch. Parking generally easy outside summer weekends.
West-facing position with sheltered marina inside breakwater walls. The entrance channel gets genuine tidal flow on the change which drives the squid and tailor bite. Fishes well in most conditions thanks to the breakwater shelter. Easterly mornings are calmest. Water clarity is generally good; reduces in days after winter storms. The marina is smaller than Hillarys but the entrance flow can be stronger.
Slippery rocks on the walls after rain or in heavy dew. Boat wash from vessels entering the channel can snap light leaders and surprise inattentive anglers. Pedestrians and diners move along the foreshore; back-cast carefully. Bluebottles drift in during summer northerlies. The entrance channel current is genuine on big tides; stay back from the lower walls.
Gear & Rigs
Squid: 2.0–3.0 jigs in pink, orange or natural worked along the walls under any lit sections at night. Herring and skippy: 7ft 6–10lb spin gear with paternoster #6 hooks. Tailor at the entrance: 9ft rod with 15–20lb braid and ganged-hook mulies or 30–40g metals at the tide change. Bream: light 4–6lb gear around walls. Snook: shallow stickbaits at first light. Light gear is the local game.
Seasons
Squid is the headline year-round target with peaks in spring (Sep–Nov) and late summer (Feb–Mar). Tailor push through autumn (March–June). Herring are year-round with summer peaks. Snook are a summer first-light surface fishery. Garfish hold year-round in calm corners. Bream year-round around walls.

- Quinns Rocks — Drive 5 minutes north for rock-platform reef fishing on the open coast.
Frequently Asked
Yes — Mindarie is smaller and gets less fishing pressure. The trade-off is fewer walls and less variety, but for squid and herring sessions the reduced crowds are an advantage. Dining and amenity options are still good.
Late afternoon into evening from August through February with peaks in spring and late summer. The lit walls concentrate squid after dark; fish 2.0–3.0 jigs slowly along the wall edges.
Around the entrance channel during tide changes — fish the edges where current meets the rock walls. Cast metals or ganged-hook mulies across the seam at dawn and dusk during autumn (March–June).
No — signage applies along the boardwalks adjacent to outdoor dining and waitstaff will move you. Stick to the public foreshore walls and you're fine.
