Local Knowledge
Mangles Bay is the sheltered water between Point Peron and Garden Island — a protected, north-facing bay that's been Perth's most famous snapper spot for generations. Seagrass meadows, sand patches, and easy wade access make it a genuine multi-species fishery: whiting and flathead on the flats in summer, bream around the edges, squid over the weed, and a legal window for snapper either side of the spawning closure.
Wade the sand patches between seagrass at first light for yellowfin whiting and flathead — small surface lures or lightly weighted prawn baits on light gear. King George whiting sit on the cleaner sand edges; drift baits like squid strip or pipi on a long-shank hook. For snapper (outside the closure), fish the deeper water towards the Garden Island causeway at dawn/dusk with mulies or soft plastics. Squid jigs work over the weed in spring and summer.
King George and sand whiting (summer flats), yellowfin whiting (wading at first light), flathead (sand edges), bream, herring, squid (over seagrass), and pink snapper in the legal window. Blue swimmer crabs are a headline through the Cockburn Sound season.
It's a busy recreation zone — boats, kayaks, swimmers — so keep casts controlled and fish the quiet margins at dawn and dusk. Don't drag nets across seagrass; lift them clear. Light gear and clean presentations beat heavy tackle here.
Access & Conditions
Multiple sealed car parks along Esplanade and Arcadia Drive in Rockingham giving access to different sections of Mangles Bay. Beach access is short and sealed in places — partial mobility access; wading the flats is not. Public toilets at the main foreshore reserves. Cafes, restaurants, supermarket, fuel and a tackle shop within 500m. No formal beach lighting; head torch needed for dawn or dusk sessions. Parking fills on summer weekends.
North-facing protected bay between Point Peron and Garden Island. Sheltered from the prevailing westerly weather; the afternoon Fremantle Doctor blows across but the causeway and shape buffer it. Easterly mornings are calmest. Water clarity is generally excellent in Cockburn Sound; reduces only after winter storms. The bay is shallow (mostly under 2m) and seagrass-heavy, which dictates the fishery character.
Pink snapper closed season 1 August – 31 January is strictly enforced — DPIRD compliance officers operate in Cockburn Sound. Stingrays cruise the shallow flats; shuffle when wading. Boat and kayak traffic is constant during the day; keep long casts clear of moving vessels. Bluebottles drift in during summer northerlies. Algal blooms periodically affect Cockburn Sound; check DPIRD advisories. Don't drag through seagrass; it's protected habitat.
Gear & Rigs
Yellowfin whiting on flats: 7ft 4–8lb spin gear with surface lures or lightly weighted prawn baits on a long-shank #6 paternoster. KGW: same light spin with drift baits like squid strip or pipi on a long-shank hook. Flathead: 6–10lb gear with 2–3 inch soft plastics on 1/8 oz jigheads worked along sand edges. Pink snapper (in season): 8–10kg setup with whole mulies or large soft plastics at the deeper edges towards the causeway. Squid: 2.0–3.0 jigs over the weed beds.

Cockburn Sound snapper is closed 1 August – 31 January each year for the spawning aggregation — no targeting, no retention. Outside the closure (February through July) they're a genuine target near the Garden Island causeway. Always verify current dates with DPIRD.
Yes — wading the seagrass-and-sand flats at first light is the headline. Stay shallow, shuffle for stingrays, and fish the sand patches between weed beds. Surface lures for yellowfin whiting are particularly effective on calm rising tides.
On the cleaner sand edges between weed beds. Drift baits like squid strip or pipi on a long-shank #6 hook on light gear. Sight-fishing is feasible on calm sunny days with polarised glasses; the visual takes are part of the appeal.
Yes — sheltered shallow water, sealed foreshore amenities, easy wade access on calm days, and a productive light-tackle fishery. Adult supervision around boats and kayak traffic is sensible. Sun protection matters in summer.
