Local Knowledge
Hamelin Bay is the sheltered cove 20 minutes south of Margaret River township — bay shape and an offshore reef keep it calmer than the surf coast either side. Old jetty ruins and shipwrecks give structure the bare sand would never have; stingrays cruise the shallows like they own the place (they do); and the autumn salmon run puts serious schools on the beach in a tight Mar–May window. A genuine destination bay, not just another stop on the way.
Fish the beach and boat ramp area straight onto the sand — small baits and metal slugs for herring, skippy, tarwhine and sand whiting year-round. Autumn (Mar–May specifically) is salmon time: metal slugs and poppers cast into the schools, retrieved fast. Work squid jigs along the reef edges and the old jetty ruins at night. For mulloway and tailor, fish the deeper gutters at dusk into dark with mulies or mullet strips.
Australian salmon (Mar–May migration — the headline), tailor (autumn), herring, skippy, tarwhine (year-round bread-and-butter), sand whiting in summer, squid year-round around the ruins and reef, mulloway and jumbo tailor in the deeper gutters. Offshore from the ramp: pink snapper, samson, yellowtail kingfish.
Holiday park and campsites fill on long weekends, so book ahead. Limited services in the bay itself; fuel up and buy bait in Augusta or Margaret River before committing. Don't feed or chase the stingrays; they're protected and approach naturally.
Access & Conditions
Sealed road into Hamelin Bay with a single foreshore car park beside the boat ramp. Beach access is short and on sand — partial mobility access; the productive reef-edge positions are not. Caravan park and campground on-site; no other accommodation immediately in the bay. Public toilets and limited basic facilities at the campground/holiday park. No fuel or shop in the bay; closest are Augusta (15 minutes south) or Margaret River (20 minutes north). The drive from Perth is around 3.5 hours.
South-facing sheltered cove with offshore reef breaking the worst incoming SW swell. Fishes well in conditions that shut down the surf coast either side. Easterly mornings are calmest. The bay shape means relatively predictable conditions; the autumn salmon run is the most reliable annual event. Water clarity is generally excellent — outstanding by South West standards thanks to the reef shelter and limited freshwater inputs. Stingrays in the shallows are a defining local feature.
Stingrays in the shallows are protected and aren't aggressive but they're abundant — watch where you step when wading. Old jetty ruins and shipwrecks have rusty metal hazards under the water; don't dive or wade into structure. West Coast Bioregion demersal closures apply to land-based pink snapper; verify before targeting. Bluebottles drift in occasionally. Sharks transit the area but have not historically affected fishing safety. Mobile coverage is patchy in the bay.
Gear & Rigs
Salmon and tailor: 9–11ft rod, 15–25lb braid, 25lb fluoro, 30–40g metals or ganged-hook mulies. Squid: 2.5–3.0 jigs along reef edges and around the old jetty ruins at night. Bread-and-butter species: 7ft 6–10lb spin gear with paternoster #6 hooks. Mulloway and jumbo tailor: 10–12kg setup with whole baits in deeper gutters at night. Sand whiting: light 4–8lb spin with surface lures or prawn baits. Bring spare jigs; the ruins snag tackle.
Seasons
Australian salmon are the tight autumn headline (Mar–May) — schools push past in a defined window. Tailor overlap with salmon season. Squid year-round around the ruins and reef. Bread-and-butter species (herring, skippy, tarwhine) are year-round. Sand whiting are October–April on the cleaner sand. Mulloway are year-round in the deeper gutters with peaks late summer through autumn at night. Pink snapper and samson are year-round offshore.

Tight autumn window, typically March through May. The bay shape means schools push past predictable interception points. Cast 30–40g metals or poppers through working schools. Easterly mornings with calm conditions produce best.
Hamelin Bay Holiday Park is on-site with caravan, camping and cabin options. Books out fast on long weekends and over Easter; book well ahead. No other accommodation in the bay itself.
