Local Knowledge

Why locals fish this spot

Guilderton is where the Moore River meets the Indian Ocean, and the sandbar between them dictates the fishing. Most of the year the bar is closed and the river sits as a long tannin-brown lagoon — classic light-tackle bream country with snags, rock walls and flats running well upstream. When heavy winter rain cuts the bar, brown water pushes out into blue and the mouth switches on for big mulloway and tailor. Two distinct fisheries hiding inside one tidy coastal village.

How to fish this spot

When the bar is closed, work the river — small hardbodies and soft plastics around timber snags, rock walls and deeper holes for bream. Kayaks help for the skinnier upstream pockets. When the bar is open, fish the mouth where brown meets blue on a rising tide — whole mulies, mullet strips or big soft plastics for mulloway and tailor, especially at dawn and dusk. The beach north of the rock groyne fishes well for tailor, whiting, herring and salmon when there's a bit of white water and defined gutters.

Common catches

Black bream (the upstream signature — wade the flats, work the snags), tailor and mulloway at the mouth (bar open, dawn/dusk), tailor on the beach in autumn, herring and sand whiting along the shore year-round, flathead off sand edges, and salmon schools through autumn.

Access and tips

Moore River bream are among the slowest-growing in WA; take only what you'll eat and stick cleanly inside the bag and size limits. 4WD access north of the rock groyne is fine on the tracks but the dry sand is soft. Two formal fishing platforms (Silver Creek, Stephens Crescent boardwalk) for anyone not wanting to wade or beach-cast.

Access & Conditions

Getting there

Multiple sealed car parks at Guilderton foreshore reserve, the rock groyne, Silver Creek and Stephens Crescent boardwalk fishing platforms. Sealed paths to the platforms — among the more mobility-friendly remote fishing spots in WA. Public toilets, BBQs, caravan park, general store and tavern in town. 4WD beach access north of the rock groyne via established tracks. No formal beach lighting; the platforms have some ambient light but head torches help. Caravan parking fills on long weekends.

How it fishes

West-facing exposed coast with the Moore River mouth as the defining feature. Bar state changes the fishery character entirely. The bar is closed most of the year; opens after heavy winter rain when river flow exceeds beach buildup. Lagoon water is tannin-tinted year-round. Easterly mornings are calmest. Afternoon onshore breezes blow up most days. Beach gutters shift after each significant swell event.

Hazards

Bar state changes safety dramatically — when the bar is closed, the river is calm and safe; when open, the channel current at the mouth is strong and can sweep waders. Don't wade across an open bar. Soft sand on 4WD tracks; deflate tyres. Big swell makes the rock groyne unsafe; stay back in heavy seas. Mosquitoes and sandflies at dawn and dusk in warmer months. Snakes are present in dunes through warmer months. Mobile coverage is reasonable in town, patchier on the river upstream.

Gear & Rigs

River bream: 7ft 2–6lb spin gear with 4–6lb fluoro leader, small hardbody minnows or 1.5–2.5 inch soft plastics worked tight to snags and rock walls. Tailor and mulloway at the open mouth: 10–12kg setup with whole mulies, mullet strips, or big soft plastics on heavier gear (run-out tide is the prime window). Beach tailor and salmon: 9–11ft rod with 15–25lb braid, 25lb fluoro, 30–40g metals. Sand whiting and herring: light 4–8lb spin with paternoster #6 hooks.

Seasons

Black bream are year-round in the river with peaks in the warmer months when fish push onto flats. Tailor are reliable autumn (March–June) at the beach and at the open mouth. Australian salmon push through in autumn — the Indian Ocean Drive coast is on the salmon run path. Mulloway are an October–April night fishery, best when the bar is open. Sand whiting are October–April. Bar typically opens after heavy winter rain and closes through summer.

If this spot's blown out

  • Lancelin (Jetty & Back Beach) — Drive 30 minutes north for the major destination jetty and back beach fishery.
  • Seabird — Drive 15 minutes north for quieter remote-gutter beach fishing.
  • Yanchep Lagoon — Drive south for the protected metro lagoon when conditions are too rough.

Frequently Asked

When does the Moore River sandbar open?

Typically after heavy winter rain when river flow exceeds beach buildup — usually June through September. Outside the open window, the river sits as a long lagoon. Bar state dictates the fishery: closed for upstream bream, open for mouth tailor and mulloway.

Where do I fish for bream at Guilderton?

The river itself, upstream from the bar — work timber snags, rock walls and deeper holes with small hardbodies or soft plastics. Two formal fishing platforms (Silver Creek and Stephens Crescent boardwalk) suit anglers who don't want to wade or kayak. Kayaks help reach the skinnier upstream pockets.

Are there facilities at Guilderton?

Yes — caravan park, general store, tavern, public toilets, BBQs and beach showers in town. Among the better-equipped remote coastal villages on the Indian Ocean Drive. Caravan parking fills on long weekends; book ahead.

Why are Moore River bream protected?

They're among the slowest-growing bream populations in WA. Standard size and bag limits apply but the local convention is to take only what you'll eat and release the rest. Sustainable practice protects the long-term fishery.
