Local Knowledge
The Fishing Boat Harbour is a working commercial harbour with deep water, permanent lighting, and structure everywhere — pylons, walls, moorings. The commercial boats stir up bait, and the lights draw everything in after dark. It's one of the best night fishing spots in the metro area when the open coast is blown out. The Cicerello's/Kailis precinct on the foreshore makes it the rare deep-water fishery you can wrap up with fish and chips.
Fish the walls and pylons, working baits or jigs tight to the structure. Tide changes push water through the harbour and switch the bite on. For squid, work the lit edges slowly at night. For herring and skippy, float a light rig along the pylon line. For mulloway, fish whole mulies or live baits along the deeper sections near the entrance after dark.
Herring, skippy, squid (good under the lights at night), tailor, garfish, tarwhine, snook on jigs at first light, and mulloway around the deeper structure — the harbour entrance is close to known jewfish territory. Bream tucked along the walls. Black bream around the structure.
Be respectful of commercial operators and other users. Keep casts tight and controlled, not across the channel. Night sessions are the go here — arrive after the restaurants close and fish until the bite drops off.
Access & Conditions
Multiple sealed car parks around the harbour precinct including Mews Road and the Cicerello's/Kailis foreshore. Sealed paths along most of the wall and foreshore — among the more mobility-friendly working-harbour fisheries in the metro area. Public toilets, restaurants (including the famous Cicerello's), cafes and a tackle shop within 200m of any productive spot. Excellent lighting across the precinct so head torches aren't strictly needed but help with rigging. Parking can be tight on weekend evenings but is generally easier after the restaurants close.
West-facing position with the harbour walls creating substantial shelter. The harbour fishes through almost any weather thanks to the breakwater protection. Tide changes through the entrance channel are when the bite switches on. Easterly mornings are calmest for outside-the-harbour beach sections. Water clarity is variable — naturally turbid because of the working port activity. Commercial vessel wash is constant during the day; quietest fishing is late evening into night.
Working commercial harbour — vessel traffic is constant during the day, including large fishing vessels and trawlers. Keep lines clear of navigation lanes and active vessel movements. Slippery walls after rain or heavy dew. Bluebottles drift in during summer northerlies. Don't fish from active loading or fueling zones; the operators will move you. Mosquitoes at dusk in warmer months.
Gear & Rigs
Squid: 2.5–3.0 jigs in pink, orange or natural worked along the lit walls at night. Herring and skippy: 7ft 6–10lb spin gear with paternoster #6 hooks, baited with prawn or maggot. Mulloway: 8–10kg setup with 30–40lb braid, 50lb leader, whole mulies or live baits on a 5/0 single hook running rig fished near the entrance after dark. Tailor: 9ft rod with 15–20lb braid and ganged-hook mulies or 30g metals at dusk. Bream: light 4–6lb gear around walls.

Yes for the foreshore sections in calm conditions during daylight with adult supervision. Sealed paths, lighting, restaurants and toilets nearby make it a reasonable family option. Heavy mulloway-style night fishing is not the right setup for kids; daytime herring sessions are.
