Local Knowledge

Why locals fish this spot

Denmark sits on the south coast 55km west of Albany and 75km east of Walpole, between the Wilson Inlet bar and the rolling hills of the karri country. Wilson Inlet is the headline — a wave-dominated estuary with a sandbar that closes from late summer through to about August in most years and a black bream fishery that runs through both phases. Ocean Beach is the open Southern Ocean surf option, a short drive south of town, where the autumn salmon migration stacks through the gutters. Lights Beach further west and the Hay River mouth on the inlet's eastern arm fill the supporting card.

How to fish this spot

Wilson Inlet bream: light spin with small soft plastics, hardbodies or blade lures worked tight to the snags around the Hay River mouth, the Denmark River arm and the deeper holes through the inlet, especially on the run-out into dusk. Cobbler in the inlet: paternoster rigs with prawn or fresh squid fished after dark from the deeper holes and the inlet edges — they bite year-round but the post-dusk window is when most are caught. King George whiting and flathead: walk the shallow sand patches on a rising tide with bait or surface lures. Ocean Beach surf: gutters and channels close to shore for salmon and tailor on metals or ganged mulies through the autumn run, with mulloway after dark on whole mulies or live herring. Lights Beach rocks and beach: heavier gear for salmon, herring, skippy and the occasional samson when the swell behaves.

Common catches

Black bream are the headline — Wilson Inlet and the Hay River produce quality fish year-round. Cobbler from the inlet at night, KGW and flathead off the flats, herring, skippy, garfish and squid year-round. Salmon and tailor through autumn off Ocean Beach, mulloway from the deeper surf gutters after dark.

Access and tips

The Wilson Inlet sandbar is opened most years by mechanical excavation through Ocean Beach to mitigate flooding around the inlet edges — once it opens, the bream concentrate at the bar and the salmon push into the inlet on the rising tide. Time a session around the post-opening week if the timing works. Greens Pool and the William Bay National Park area to the west are a sanctuary zone closed to fishing since 2018; do not cast there. Cobbler are nocturnal — daytime sessions rarely produce them.

Access & Conditions

Getting there

Sealed road from Perth via the Albany Highway and the South Coast Highway, around 5 hours. Wilson Inlet has multiple foreshore access points around the town and a sealed boat ramp at Rivermouth Caravan Park. Ocean Beach is a 10-minute drive south of town with a sealed car park, beach access and a small surf club. Lights Beach is 20 minutes west on a sealed road with a sealed lookout car park and stair access. The Hay River mouth on the inlet's eastern arm is accessed by sealed road and informal river-bank tracks. Town has fuel, supermarkets, cafes, a tackle outlet, a hospital and a wide range of accommodation. Albany is 45 minutes east for full regional services.

How it fishes

Wilson Inlet stays fishable in almost any weather thanks to the sheltering shape of the inlet and the surrounding hills. Ocean Beach faces the full Southern Ocean and washes out fast in any sizeable swell — easterly mornings are the cleanest window. Lights Beach sets up rougher when the swell wraps in and is best on a settled forecast. Tannin colour in the upper inlet after winter rain doesn't shut the bream down but does push lure choice toward darker patterns. Tidal range is small. The Leeuwin Current keeps the water warmer than the Albany side through autumn.

Hazards

Ocean Beach is fully exposed Southern Ocean — sets lift without warning, the beach has no sheltered corners and rip currents run strongly through the gutters. The Wilson Inlet bar is benign by comparison but the surf side of the bar fishes large after an opening and the channel can run hard. White sharks are present along this coast; the south-coast sighting frequency is lower than Esperance but the species is genuinely there. Greens Pool and the William Bay National Park area are a no-fishing sanctuary zone since 2018 — verify zoning before casting anywhere west of Lights Beach. Tiger snakes are common around the inlet fringes through the warmer months.

Gear & Rigs

Bream in the inlet: 7ft 2–6lb spin with 4–6lb fluoro leader and small plastics, hardbodies or blade lures, fished tight to snags. Cobbler: 7ft 6–10lb gear with a paternoster, #1 to 1/0 hooks and prawn or fresh squid bait, after dark. KGW and flats: 7ft 4–8lb with a long-shank #6 paternoster on prawn or pipi, or surface lures on a rising tide. Ocean Beach surf: 11–13ft rod, 25–40lb braid, 30–50lb fluoro, 40–80g metals or ganged-hook mulies for salmon and tailor; step up for mulloway with whole baits on a 6/0 single. Squid: 2.0–2.5 size jigs over the weed.

Seasons

Denmark sits in the South Coast Bioregion, so the West Coast September 2027 demersal closure does not apply here — South Coast bag and size structure runs separately and should be verified with DPIRD before targeting any demersals. Black bream fish year-round with a warmer-months peak. Australian salmon run through Ocean Beach March through July, slightly later than west-coast spots. Tailor overlap with the salmon run. King George whiting are most reliable September through April. Cobbler bite year-round but better in the warmer months and almost always after dark.

Frequently Asked

Is Wilson Inlet really that good for black bream?

Yes. Wilson Inlet is one of the recognised south-coast bream estuaries, with quality fish year-round through the Hay River arm, the Denmark River and the deeper inlet snag lines. Light gear, small presentations and clean casts to structure are the local approach. The bar phase — open or closed — shifts the fish around the inlet but does not shut the fishery down.

When does the Wilson Inlet bar open?

Most years the sandbar is opened mechanically through Ocean Beach (typically July or August) to mitigate flooding around the inlet edges; the bar then naturally closes again from late summer. The post-opening week tends to concentrate bream at the bar and lets salmon push into the inlet on the rising tide. Timing varies — check the Shire of Denmark before planning around it.

Does the West Coast demersal closure apply at Denmark?

No. Denmark sits in the South Coast Bioregion, which has its own bag and size structure for demersal scalefish and is not subject to the West Coast September 2027 closure. Verify current South Coast Bioregion rules with DPIRD before targeting pink snapper, dhufish or other demersals.

Can I fish at Greens Pool?

No. Greens Pool and the surrounding waters in William Bay National Park have been closed to fishing since 2018 and the area is a no-take sanctuary zone. The fish life has rebounded and it is now a snorkelling and swimming site rather than a fishery. Lights Beach to the east and Ocean Beach to the south of town are the open-coast options.
