Local Knowledge

Why locals fish this spot

Coogee Beach sits between Woodman Point and South Beach with a mix of sandy beach and groyne structure. The groyne creates eddies where bait collects, and the reef patches offshore add structure that holds fish. It's a good middle-ground spot — more structure than a flat beach, less intimidating than rock platform fishing.

How to fish this spot

Fish the groyne edges where turbulent water meets cleaner water — cast parallel to the rocks rather than straight out. The sandy patches between reef hold whiting on light rigs with fresh bait. At dawn and dusk, work metals along the groyne for herring and tailor. The incoming tide pushes bait against the groyne and switches the bite on.

Common catches

Herring (reliable around the groyne), tailor (dawn and dusk along the rocks), King George whiting and sand whiting (sandy patches, warmer months), tarwhine around structure, garfish on calm days, snook on jigs at first light, and squid over the weed beds.

Access and tips

Fish the groyne and beach areas away from the Omeo wreck protected zone. Don't climb the groyne when seaweed coats it; fish from the beach. Don't leave bait on the rocks.

Access & Conditions

Getting there

Sealed car park at Coogee Beach Reserve immediately behind the groyne, with overflow on Powell Road. Sealed paths from car park to upper beach and groyne base — partial mobility access; the productive lower groyne sections are not. Public toilets, beach showers and a kiosk in season at the main reserve. The Coogee Maritime Trail is signed and walkable. No formal lighting on the groyne; head torch needed for dawn or dusk sessions. Parking fills on summer weekends.

How it fishes

West-facing position with the Coogee groyne and offshore reef patches as defining features. Fishes well in swell up to about 1.5–2m on the lower groyne sections; above that the lower rocks wash. Easterly mornings are calmest; afternoon Fremantle Doctor blows directly onshore. The reef structure offshore creates localised cross-swell and ambush points. Water clarity is generally good; reduces only after winter storms.

Hazards

The Omeo wreck and Coogee Maritime Trail area nearby is a no-fishing zone — know the boundaries. Wet limestone and groyne weed growth are slippery; watch your footing. Big swell sets can wash the lower groyne sections; never fish low ledges in heavy swell. Bluebottles drift in during summer northerlies. Snorkellers and divers use the maritime trail; keep long casts clear of the protected zone.

Gear & Rigs

Tailor and salmon: 9–11ft rod, 15–25lb braid, 25lb fluoro, 30–40g metals worked across the seam. Herring: 7ft 6–10lb spin gear with paternoster #6 hooks fished close to groyne edges. KGW and sand whiting: light 4–8lb spin with a long-shank #6 paternoster on prawn or bloodworm over sandy patches. Squid: 2.5–3.0 jigs along weed edges. Snook: shallow stickbaits at first light. Light gear is the local game.

Seasons

Australian salmon push through in autumn (March–June). Tailor are reliable autumn dawn and dusk. Herring are year-round with summer peaks. KGW and sand whiting hold over cleaner sand patches with a Sep–April peak. Squid runs August–February. Snook are a summer first-light surface fishery. Garfish hold year-round on calm days.

Frequently Asked

Where is the no-fishing zone at Coogee Beach?

Around the Omeo wreck and Coogee Maritime Trail area — clearly signed and verified on DBCA maps. Boundaries are marked but verify before each session. Fishing is permitted along the groyne and beach areas away from the protected zone.

Can I dive or snorkel at Coogee Beach?

Yes — the Coogee Maritime Trail is a popular snorkelling and diving destination around the Omeo wreck. As an angler, keep long casts well clear of the protected zone and respect water users.

What's the best time for tailor at Coogee Groyne?

Dawn and dusk on a moving tide, particularly through autumn (March–June). Cast metals or pilchards along the groyne edge and work them through the wash. The incoming tide pushes bait against the structure and switches the bite on.

Is Coogee Groyne safe to fish?

In manageable swell with grippy footwear and time spent watching sets before committing to a low rock, yes. The groyne can be slippery with weed; fish from the beach and cast toward the structure when conditions are marginal. Don't fish low ledges in heavy swell.
