Local Knowledge

Why locals fish this spot

Claremont Jetty sits on the southern bank of Freshwater Bay — peaceful, walkable, and well-placed over some of the deeper water in the lower Swan. It's the classic Perth suburban bream jetty: small crowds, shoreline drop-offs either side, and enough depth off the end to hold tailor, mulloway and whiting as well. Less flash than Mosman Bay downstream, but it quietly produces year-round.

How to fish this spot

Drop small baits or light soft plastics tight to the pylons for bream — prawn, bloodworm or small hardbodies on the tide change. Work the shoreline drop-offs either side for tailor (loners or very small schools here — not Fremantle-style blitzes). Yellowfin whiting sit on the cleaner sand patches in summer. For mulloway, fish the deeper water off the end at dusk into dark on a rising tide with whole mulies or mullet strips.

Common catches

Black bream (year-round around pylons), flathead (sand edges), tailor (shoreline drop-offs, autumn), herring and skippy (bread-and-butter), yellowfin whiting (summer sand patches), and mulloway from the jetty end after dark.

Access and tips

Light gear suits the clear river water — heavy leaders get refused by bream. Swan-Canning cobbler are subject to size (430 mm min) and bag (8) limits and periodic seasonal closures — verify current DPIRD rules before keeping any. The shoreline beaches either side of the jetty hold prawns and blue mannas for scoop/trawl fishers when the water warms up. Don't fillet on the boards; the gulls move fast.

Access & Conditions

Getting there

Park along Victoria Avenue or Bay View Terrace; both are short walks to the jetty. The jetty is sealed and railed, mobility-friendly along its length. Public toilets at Claremont foreshore reserve. No formal lighting on the jetty; head torch needed for night sessions. Train and bus access is excellent — Claremont train station is 10 minutes' walk and has direct rail links to Fremantle and the city. Parking on Victoria Avenue is limited on weekends; the train option is genuinely worth using.

How it fishes

Lower Swan position in Freshwater Bay — saltwater, with moderate tidal influence. Easterly mornings are calmest. Afternoon Fremantle Doctor blows across the bay. Water clarity is generally good year-round; reduces after heavy rain. Tide changes drive the bream and tailor bite; slack water is slow. The jetty's depth profile means it fishes through most weather short of strong westerlies.

Hazards

Light hazards by Perth standards. Boards can be slippery in heavy dew. Stingrays cruise the sand around the jetty; watch your feet if you wade. Cobbler spike badly; release with care. Boat traffic on Freshwater Bay is light but be aware of moving vessels. Mosquitoes at dusk in warmer months. The shoreline rocks are slippery at low tide.

Gear & Rigs

Bream: 7ft 2–6lb spin gear with 4–6lb fluoro leader, 1.5–2.5 inch soft plastics or small suspending hardbody minnows worked tight to pylons. Flathead: 7ft 6–10lb gear with paddle-tails on 1/8 oz jigheads worked along sand edges. Whiting: light 4–8lb spin with a long-shank #6 paternoster on prawn or bloodworm. Mulloway from the end: 6–8kg setup with whole mulies or mullet strips on a 5/0 single hook running rig at dusk into dark.

Seasons

Black bream are year-round around the pylons with peaks in spring and autumn. Flathead fish best from late spring through summer. Tailor push through autumn (March–June). Yellowfin whiting are an October–April fishery on the sand patches. Mulloway are year-round but caught only occasionally from the jetty end at night. Garfish, herring and skippy round out the year-round bread-and-butter species.

Frequently Asked

Is Claremont Jetty good for beginners?

Yes — sealed jetty, railings, accessible from public transport, and a productive but light-tackle fishery. Bread-and-butter species like herring, skippy and bream are accessible on light gear. Heavy mulloway-style fishing isn't really the local game.

What's the best time to fish Claremont Jetty?

Tide changes at dawn or dusk for bream around the pylons. Summer mornings on a rising tide for yellowfin whiting on the sand patches. Autumn afternoons for tailor along the shoreline drop-offs. Calm conditions outfish windy days.

Can I prawn or scoop blue swimmers from Claremont Jetty?

Not from the jetty itself, but the shoreline beaches either side hold prawns and the occasional blue manna once the water warms up in summer. Standard Swan-Canning prawn rules apply; check DPIRD for current regulations.

Is parking easy at Claremont Jetty?

Limited on weekends — Victoria Avenue and Bay View Terrace fill fast. The walk-in from Claremont train station is 10 minutes and works well if you're packing light. Off-peak weekday parking is straightforward.
