Local Knowledge
Applecross Jetty has been ferrying Perth since 1897 and fishing well for most of that time. It sits on the south bank of the Swan at the end of Ardross Street — a peaceful suburban jetty with a playground and BBQ on the shore, sand flats and drop-offs below, and genuinely productive water without the bustle of the Canning Bridge platform a short walk east. The kind of spot where people drop in after dropping kids off.
Small soft plastics or prawn baits dragged along the sand flats and drop-offs near the jetty are deadly for flathead — early morning is prime. Work light gear tight to the pylons for bream, tarwhine and herring. Summer yellowfin whiting sit on the cleaner sand patches; take them on small prawn or bloodworm baits. For mulloway, fish the deeper water off the end at dusk into dark with whole mulies on a rising tide.
Black bream (pylon structure year-round), flathead (sand flats and drop-offs — early morning prime), tailor in autumn, yellowfin whiting on summer sand patches, tarwhine and herring around the jetty, and mulloway from the end after dark. River prawns in the shallows when the water warms.
Swan-Canning cobbler are subject to size (430 mm min) and bag (8) limits and periodic seasonal closures — verify current DPIRD rules before keeping any. Light gear suits the clear shallow water; heavy leaders get refused by bream. The jetty is family-heavy on weekend mornings — fish the quieter pre-dawn window or pick a weekday. Don't fillet on the jetty boards; the playground and BBQs put kids close by.
Access & Conditions
Park at the end of Ardross Street or along The Strand, both within a short walk. The jetty is sealed and step-on/step-off accessible — among the more mobility-friendly spots in this batch. Open parks, playground, BBQs and public toilets sit immediately on the foreshore. There's no formal lighting on the jetty itself, so a head torch is useful for any session into the dark. Parking fills on weekends when the foreshore is in use, so arrive early or pick a weekday.
South-bank position means the afternoon Fremantle Doctor blows across the river toward you — the jetty is lightly sheltered but not protected. Easterly mornings are the most comfortable to fish. Tide influence in this stretch of the Swan is subtle compared with the lower river but enough to push prawn and bream activity around the pylons. Water clarity is generally good outside the few days after heavy rain when the upper river silts the system.
Light hazards by Perth standards — a sealed jetty with railings and shore-side amenities. Boards get slippery in heavy dew and after rain. Bluebottles drift up the river in summer northerlies and can collect against the jetty structure. Stingrays cruise the sand flats; shuffle if you wade. Boat and SUP traffic uses the channel adjacent to the jetty so be aware of moving vessels when casting long.
Gear & Rigs
Bream and tarwhine: 7ft 4–8lb spin gear with a small running sinker rig and a 4–6lb fluoro leader, baited with prawn, mulie strip or bloodworm — heavy leaders get refused. Flathead: 7ft 6–10lb gear with 2–3 inch soft plastics on 1/8 oz jigheads worked slowly along the drop-offs. Whiting: same light spin gear with a long-shank #6 hook on a paternoster, baited with prawn or bloodworm. Mulloway: 6–8kg setup with a whole mulie on a 5/0 single hook running rig, fished off the end on a rising tide into dark.
Seasons
Black bream and tarwhine are year-round around the pylons with peaks in spring and autumn. Flathead are productive most of the year on the flats but hottest from late spring through summer when the water warms. Yellowfin whiting are an October–April fishery on the cleaner sand patches. Tailor push through in autumn (March–June). Mulloway are year-round but most reliable late summer through autumn after dark. River prawns appear once water temperatures rise from October on.
If this spot's blown out
- Canning Bridge (Applecross/Mount Pleasant) — Five minutes' walk east — fishes the same water with deeper drop-offs and a busier crowd.
- Point Walter (Swan River) — Other side of the river when you want flats and shallow weed lines for whiting.
- Bicton Baths (Swan River) — Calmer alternative on the south bank when the foreshore here is family-heavy.
Frequently Asked
Yes — sealed jetty, railings, playground and BBQs on the foreshore, and a productive but light-tackle fishery. It's one of the better family fishing spots in the Swan.
Early morning on a moving tide, particularly through late spring and summer. Drag a small soft plastic slowly along the sand flats and drop-offs adjacent to the jetty.
Cobbler are subject to specific Swan-Canning size and bag limits (minimum 430 mm, daily bag 8) and periodic seasonal closures — verify current DPIRD rules before keeping any. The dorsal and pectoral spines deliver a painful sting; handle with care if releasing.
Land-based fishing in WA doesn't require a licence for most species. Bag and size limits set by DPIRD apply, and freshwater species (rare in this stretch) require a separate licence.
