Local Knowledge

Why locals fish this spot

Albany is Perth's Southern Ocean alternative — five hours south-east into a different bioregion, different swell regime, and different fish. King George Sound is the classic sheltered sound fishery that gave the species its name; Emu Point channel funnels Oyster Harbour in and out with current to fish; Salmon Holes is the iconic surf beach where the autumn salmon schools pile up. Rock platforms east of town produce tailor, snapper and salmon when the swell behaves — and a healthy respect for Southern Ocean sets is not optional.

How to fish this spot

Emu Point channel: cast into the current from the rocks for herring, garfish, whiting, skippy, squid and the occasional samson — light to medium gear, berley helps. King George Sound: kayak or boat if possible, land-based from the old town jetty and rock walls for King George whiting, squid and pink snapper. Salmon Holes: time the autumn run (Mar–Jul on this coast) and spin metal slugs into the schools as they pile along the beach — big waves make conditions fickle. Rock platforms east of town (Cable Beach and on): heavier gear for tailor, snapper, and salmon when conditions allow.

Common catches

King George whiting (signature — sound and sand/weed edges), herring, skippy, garfish, squid, flathead (year-round bread-and-butter), Australian salmon (the Salmon Holes headline, Mar–Jul migration), tailor, sand whiting, and from the rocks: pink snapper, samson fish, mulloway.

Access and tips

Have a plan B in the sound if the coast blows out. Wear a life jacket on rock platforms — non-negotiable. Don't fish alone on Southern Ocean rocks under any circumstances.

Access & Conditions

Getting there

Multiple sealed roads into Albany township and to the major fishing destinations. Emu Point has sealed car parks and rock platform access. King George Sound has the old town jetty, marina walls and multiple foreshore access points. Salmon Holes has a sealed car park and walking access onto the beach via stairs. Rock platforms east of town (Cable Beach and on) require longer walks and rock scrambling. Public toilets at major reserves. Cafes, restaurants, supermarkets, fuel and tackle shops in town. The drive from Perth is around 5 hours via the Albany Highway.

How it fishes

South Coast Bioregion — different from everywhere else on this site. Southern Ocean swell is genuinely big and unpredictable; weather systems can shift fast without warning. King George Sound and Emu Point are sheltered alternatives when the coast is blown out. The Sound stays fishable in most conditions thanks to the bay shape. Salmon Holes and the open rock platforms are subject to the full Southern Ocean exposure. Easterly mornings are calmest; weather changes can be sudden.

Hazards

Southern Ocean is the real danger — Salmon Holes and the rock platforms have killed people. Never fish alone, always watch sets, wear a life jacket for rocks, and honour the big-water rules. Albany sits in the South Coast Bioregion, not West Coast — demersal rules differ from everywhere else on this site; check DPIRD before targeting snapper or dhufish. Weather changes fast. The cold water is exposure-risk for falls; survival time is shorter than warmer waters.

Gear & Rigs

KGW (sound and sand/weed edges): 7ft 4–8lb spin gear with a long-shank #6 paternoster, baited with prawn, squid strip or pipi. Light leaders suit the clear water. Salmon (Salmon Holes): 11–13ft rod with 25–40lb braid, 30–50lb fluoro, 40–80g metals — heavier than typical mainland salmon gear because of the bigger water and bigger fish. Pink snapper and samson from rocks: 15kg setup with whole fresh squid or large bait fillets. Bread-and-butter (Emu Point, sound): 7ft 6–10lb spin with paternoster #6 hooks.

Seasons

Australian salmon are the autumn-into-winter migration headline (March–July) — slightly later than west coast spots. Tailor overlap with salmon. Pink snapper are a cooler-months target (May–September) subject to South Coast Bioregion demersal rules (different from West Coast). KGW are year-round but most reliable September–April. Squid, herring, skippy, garfish year-round.

Frequently Asked

Are Salmon Holes really dangerous?

Yes — Salmon Holes and the surrounding rock platforms have killed people. Southern Ocean swell lifts sets without warning. Always wear a life jacket, never fish alone, and watch the water for several minutes before committing to a low position. The salmon are worth it; the risk requires honest respect.

What's different about Albany compared to West Coast spots?

South Coast Bioregion has different demersal rules, different salmon migration timing (Mar–Jul versus Mar–Jun on west coast), and Southern Ocean swell that's bigger and more unpredictable than the Indian Ocean. KGW originated here as a species — the fishery is genuine and historic.

Where do I fish in Albany if the coast is blown out?

King George Sound and Emu Point — both sheltered enough to fish through almost any open-coast weather. The town jetty, marina walls and Emu Point rocks all produce when Salmon Holes is unfishable. Have a plan B every session.

How long is the drive from Perth to Albany?

Around 5 hours via the Albany Highway. Long-weekend trips are common; multi-day stays make most sense for the species variety and weather flexibility. Caravan parks and accommodation in town make it practical as a fishing destination.
