Breaksea Cod
Reef / OffshoreA handsome small reef cod of WA's lower west and South Coast — orange-brown with darker mottling and a dark blotch on the gill cover. Holds tight to reef, ledges and broken ground, ambushing prey from cover. A demersal scalefish caught up in the West Coast closure and the demersal mixed bag, and one of the best-eating small reef fish in the South West.
Breaksea cod (Epinephelides armatus) are a small, good-looking serranid reef cod endemic to southern WA waters, common on reef, ledges and broken ground along the lower west and South Coast. Orange-brown with darker mottling and a distinctive dark blotch on the gill cover, they're a true ambush predator — holding tight to structure and crash-tackling baits and lures that pass the cover before bolting straight back into the reef. They're a regular and welcome capture while bottom-fishing for dhufish, snapper and other South West demersals, and they punch above their size both in the fight and on the plate. As a demersal scalefish they're managed within the demersal mixed bag and affected by the West Coast boat-based closure, so check current rules before targeting them in that zone.
Squid, octopus, fish fillet (mullet, scaly mackerel), pilchard, prawn
Soft plastics on 1/2–1oz jigheads, micro and slow-pitch jigs, small bibbed minnows over reef
Paternoster rig with 4/0–6/0 circle hooks on 40–60lb mono leader and enough lead to hold bottom over reef. A running sinker rig with a single circle hook works tight to structure. Like all reef cod, they dive for cover on the strike, so don't fish too light — lift them straight off the bottom and keep them coming.
Drop baits or plastics tight to reef edges, ledges and broken ground and work them just above and into the structure. Breaksea cod ambush from cover, so the bite often comes the instant the bait reaches the bottom near the reef. Lift hard immediately to turn the fish away from the structure — give them slack and they're back in the reef. Slow-pitch jigs worked close to the bottom also produce. Move along the reef to find the better fish.
Available year-round in the South West and on the South Coast, with settled weather giving the best access to offshore reef. Tide changes trigger the bite; dawn and dusk are most productive. Neap tides make bottom-fishing in deeper reef easier.
Up to 55cm and ~4kg, commonly 1–2.5kg
Year-round (South West / South Coast)
Excellent — firm, white, sweet flesh and one of the best small reef fish in the South West on the plate. Bleed and ice on capture. Suits pan-frying, baking and most simple preparations; the fillets hold together well.
Breaksea cod is a rockcod (Family Epinephelidae/Serranidae) and a demersal scalefish: counted within the demersal scalefish mixed daily bag (4 outside the West Coast bioregion; bag 2 in the West Coast region and 1 at the Abrolhos). IMPORTANT: a boat-based demersal closure applies in the West Coast bioregion (Kalbarri to Augusta) until at least Spring 2027. Always check current DPIRD rules — regulations may change.
South West and lower west reefs and the South Coast grounds out of Albany and Esperance hold breaksea cod, usually as a quality bycatch while targeting dhufish and pink snapper. Identify them by the orange-brown mottling and the dark gill-cover blotch. Mind the West Coast boat-based demersal closure — if it's in force, this is a fish to release or to target outside that zone. Lift hard on the strike to keep them out of the reef.
