Solunar fishing — common questions

What is solunar theory?

Solunar theory predicts that fish, deer, and other wildlife are most active during periods when the sun and moon's gravitational influence is strongest — at moon overhead, moon underfoot, and the hour either side of moonrise and moonset. These are called major and minor feeding windows.

When are the best moon phases for fishing?

Activity is generally highest around the new moon and full moon, when the sun and moon align to produce the strongest tides. The three days either side of full or new moon are typically the most productive for both saltwater and freshwater fishing.

How do I use solunar windows?

Pick a day with a strong moon phase, then plan to fish during the major or minor windows shown on this page. If a window overlaps with sunrise, sunset, or a tide change, that's the highest-percentage time to be on the water.
