Local Knowledge
Sorrento has two purpose-built groynes that create defined structure in an otherwise open stretch of coast. The groynes concentrate bait and create the kind of current breaks that fish use as ambush points. Between Sorrento and Trigg, this stretch of coast is consistently productive for whiting, tarwhine, tailor, and herring. The Hillarys Boat Harbour breakwater 1km north adds further structure to the local fishery.
Fish the groyne edges where current breaks create eddies — cast parallel to the rocks and work baits or metals through the seam where turbulent and clean water meet. The sand between the groynes holds whiting on light rigs. At dawn and dusk, tailor and herring work the groyne edges aggressively. For salmon in autumn, run-and-gun with metals along the groyne edges as schools push past.
KGW and sand whiting (sandy patches between groynes), tarwhine, herring (groyne edges), tailor (dawn and dusk), Australian salmon when they're running the coast in autumn, and skippy in the wash. Snook on jigs at first light in summer.
Fish the dawn window before swimmers arrive or fish the groynes at dusk when the beach empties. Keep casts away from swimming areas. Don't climb the groynes when seaweed coats them; fish from the beach and cast toward the structure.
Access & Conditions
Sealed car parks at Sorrento Beach Reserve and along West Coast Drive with multiple beach access points. Sealed paths from car park to the upper beach — partial mobility access; the productive groyne-edge positions are not. Public toilets, beach showers, cafes and a kiosk in season at the main reserve. No formal lighting; head torch needed for dawn or dusk sessions. Parking fills on summer weekends.
West-facing groynes fully exposed to incoming SW swell. Fish well in swell up to about 1.5m on the lower groyne sections; above that the lower rocks wash. Easterly mornings are calmest; afternoon Fremantle Doctor blows onshore. Salmon runs in autumn benefit from cleaner-water easterly weather. The two groynes at Sorrento create distinctive eddies and seams; fishing the seam between turbulent and clean water is the local skill.
Wet limestone is slippery, especially with algae growth — fish from the beach when seaweed is on the groynes. Big swell sets can wash anglers off lower rocks. Bluebottles drift in during summer northerlies. Sharks transit the area but have not historically affected fishing safety. Patrolled swimming hours apply in summer; don't fish swim zones. Sorrento is a popular family beach; back-cast with care.
Gear & Rigs
Tailor and salmon: 9–11ft rod, 15–25lb braid, 25lb fluoro, 30–40g metals worked across the seam. Herring: 7ft 6–10lb spin gear with paternoster #6 hooks, fished close to the groyne edges. KGW and sand whiting: light 4–8lb spin with a long-shank #6 paternoster on prawn or bloodworm fished over sand patches between groynes. Snook: shallow stickbaits at first light along the groyne edges.
Seasons
Australian salmon are the autumn headline (March–June). Tailor overlap with salmon season and continue through summer. Herring are year-round with summer peaks. KGW and sand whiting hold year-round on cleaner sand patches with peaks Sep–April. Tarwhine year-round around the groynes. Snook are a summer first-light surface fishery.
If this spot's blown out
- Hillarys Boat Harbour — Walk or drive 5 minutes north for the major sheltered marina with extensive walls and squid water.
- Marmion Beach — Walk south for the marine park reef-and-sand mix with similar species.
- Mullaloo Beach — Drive 10 minutes north for surf-gutter fishing without the groyne structure.
Frequently Asked
Two purpose-built groynes — the southern and northern groynes about 200m apart. Both create defined eddies and current seams. The sand between them is productive whiting water; the groyne edges hold tailor and herring.
Yes for the protected swim-area sections in calm conditions with adult supervision and light tackle. The groynes themselves are slippery and not suited to younger anglers. Sorrento Beach Reserve has cafes, toilets and amenities that suit families.
March through June, with the strongest interception sessions in April–May. Salmon hug the coast and the groynes are known interception points. Run-and-gun with metals on a fast retrieve along the groyne edges.
Yes outside patrolled swimming hours and the afternoon seabreeze in summer. Dawn before swimmers arrive and dusk when the beach empties are the productive windows. Mornings are easier in calm easterly weather.
