Local Knowledge
Secret Harbour has deep channels and gutters carved by the reef system offshore. The name doesn't help keep it quiet — it's well known among Rockingham-area anglers — but the beach is long enough that you can find space. Larger tailor show up here toward the end of summer, and the deeper features hold mulloway in spring. The combination of reef structure, channel depth and a long stretch of fishable beach makes it a genuine destination for serious land-based anglers.
Walk the beach looking for channels where water drains between reef sections — these funnels concentrate bait and fish follow. Cast metals through the channels at dawn and dusk for tailor. For mulloway, fish the deeper channels at night with fresh bait on the bottom. The outgoing tide draining through the channels can be the most productive window. For whiting, fish the cleaner sandy patches between reef sections on light gear with prawn or bloodworm.
Tailor (late summer produces bigger fish), mulloway (Nov peak in channels), herring, KGW and sand whiting on the cleaner sand patches, and Australian salmon when the autumn run hits. Skippy in the wash. Garfish on calm days.
Fish the sandy channels between reef patches rather than casting directly over the reef. The larger tailor here tend to show up Feb–Mar when the smaller fish have moved on. Don't leave gear unattended at the more remote access points; opportunistic theft is a known issue. Bring spare rigs — the reef sections snag fast.
Access & Conditions
Sealed car parks at multiple foreshore access points along Secret Harbour Boulevard and adjacent streets. Soft sand walk from car park to productive channel sections; not mobility-friendly. Public toilets and showers at the main foreshore reserve. No formal beach lighting; head torch is essential for night sessions. Parking is generally easy outside summer weekends and school holidays.
West-facing ocean beach with offshore reef structure that creates deep channels feeding through the reef sections. Fishes well in swell up to about 2.5m. The reef provides some protection but not the full-bay shelter of Falcon. Easterly mornings are calmest. Channels reshape with significant swell events; spot quality moves through the year. Water clarity is generally good and can be excellent on calm winter days.
Reef sections snag gear quickly; bring spares. Slippery rocks at low tide; watch footing. Big swell sets can wash anglers; never fish low ledges in heavy swell. Stingrays cruise the channels; shuffle if you wade. Bluebottles drift in during summer northerlies. Sharks transit the area but have not historically affected fishing safety. Soft sand walking with heavy gear is tiring; pack light.
Gear & Rigs
Tailor: 9–11ft rod, 15–25lb braid, 25lb fluoro, ganged-hook mulies or 30–40g metals worked through channels. Mulloway: 10–12kg setup with 4–6 oz running sinker and whole fresh squid or live mullet, fished in the deepest channel sections. Herring: 7ft 6–10lb spin gear with a paternoster carrying #6 hooks, fished close to channel edges. KGW and sand whiting: light 4–8lb spin with a long-shank #6 paternoster on prawn or bloodworm. Salmon (autumn): heavy tailor gear with metals on a fast retrieve.
Seasons
Tailor are summer through autumn (Nov–Jun) with the larger fish (40–60 cm) showing up Feb–Mar after the smaller schools move on. Mulloway peak in November with deep channels at night the prime target. Australian salmon push through in autumn (March–June). Herring are year-round with autumn peaks. KGW and sand whiting hold year-round on cleaner sand patches.

- Madora Bay — Drive south for the known mulloway-night beach with reef-protected water.
Frequently Asked
February and March, after the smaller schools that dominate early summer have moved on. Quality fish in the 40–60 cm range cruise the deeper channels at dawn and dusk. Fish ganged-hook mulies or larger metals through the channels for the best shot.
The name predates the suburb's development and growth. It's well-known among Rockingham-area anglers but the beach is long enough that you can find space outside peak summer weekends.
The deeper channels feeding through the reef sections — walk the beach and look for darker water drains between reef patches. November is the peak month, with night fishing on an outgoing tide the standard setup.
Yes — KGW and sand whiting hold year-round on the cleaner sand patches between reef sections. Fish a long-shank #6 paternoster with prawn or bloodworm on light gear, in the sandy gaps rather than over the reef itself.
