Local Knowledge
Why locals fish this spot

Safety Bay is a deep, protected bay that holds good numbers of King George whiting in the warmer months — a species that's harder to find at most metro beach spots. The sheltered water and seagrass beds create ideal whiting habitat, and squid move through seasonally. When the salmon schools push in close during autumn, the bay mouth can fire.

How to fish this spot

For King George whiting, use long shank hooks with fresh bait (beach worms or small prawns) fished over the sandy patches between weed beds. Keep rigs light — these fish are line-shy in clear water. For squid, work jigs along the weed edges at dawn and dusk. When salmon show, switch to metals and work them fast through the schools.

Common catches

King George whiting (the main draw, Sep–Apr), squid (over weed beds), herring, and Australian salmon in autumn when schools push into the bay.

Access and tips

The clear water means light leaders and subtle presentations matter. Polarised sunglasses help you spot fish and weed beds from the shore. If the whiting aren't on the sand, they're tucked into the weed edges — target the transition zone. This spot fishes best on calm, sunny days when you can sight-fish.
