Local Knowledge
The ramp area sits in the sheltered waters of Warnbro Sound with structure, lighting, and easy access. It's a quieter alternative to Rockingham when you want a quick session without the crowds, and the lights draw bait and herring in after dark. The Cape Peron-to-Bird Rocks reef system pushes bait into the sound, which fills the inshore fishery.
Fish the edges around the ramp pylons and rock walls where current pushes through on the tide. Herring school under the lights at night — float a small bait or sabiki rig and you'll find them. The sandy bottom either side holds whiting in the warmer months. For squid, work jigs along the rock walls at dusk through spring and summer.
Herring, skippy, tailor, bream in warmer months, KGW and sand whiting over the sand, garfish in calm corners, flathead on sand edges, and squid when the weed beds nearby are active.
Stay clear of boats launching and retrieving, especially on weekends. Fish the edges, not the middle of the channel. A solid option for a weeknight arvo session when you don't want to drive far. Don't park in launching/retrieving lanes.
Access & Conditions
Sealed car park immediately adjacent to the boat ramp with overflow on Warnbro Sound Avenue. Sealed step-on access along the ramp walls — partial mobility access. Public toilets at the ramp facility. Lighting is solid for evening sessions. The drive from central Perth is around 45 minutes via Kwinana Freeway. Parking generally easy outside summer weekends; busy on weekends with boat launching activity.
South-facing position inside Warnbro Sound — sheltered from prevailing westerly weather. The sound stays fishable in conditions that shut down open coast spots. Easterly mornings are calmest. The ramp's tidal flow on the change concentrates bait. Water clarity is generally good in Warnbro Sound; reduces only after heavy rain or strong northerlies that stir seagrass beds.
Active boat ramp — stay clear of launching/retrieving lanes, especially on weekends. Slippery rock walls after rain or in heavy dew. Boat wash from launching vessels can snap light leaders. Bluebottles drift in during summer northerlies. Stingrays cruise the sand around the ramp; watch your feet if you wade. Don't fish in launching lanes; ramp users have priority and disputes get heated fast.
Gear & Rigs
Herring and skippy: 7ft 6–10lb spin gear with paternoster #6 hooks or sabiki rig under the lights at night. KGW and sand whiting: light 4–8lb spin with a long-shank #6 paternoster on prawn or bloodworm. Tailor: 9ft rod with 15–20lb braid and ganged-hook mulies or 20–40g metals at dusk. Squid: 2.0–3.0 jigs along the rock walls. Bream (warmer months): light gear with small soft plastics around structure.
Seasons

Frequently Asked
Fish the edges (rock walls and pylons), not the middle of the channel where boats are launching and retrieving. Stay clear of launching lanes especially on weekends. Park outside the launching area. Disputes with boat users get heated fast; stay courteous.
Late afternoon into evening from August through February under the ramp lights. Fish 2.0–3.0 jigs slowly along the rock walls. Calm conditions are best — choppy water makes jigs harder to work.
Yes for the foreshore sections in calm conditions with adult supervision. Stay well clear of active boat ramps and launching lanes. Light tackle bread-and-butter fishing for herring and skippy under the lights is the right setup for kids.
Less crowded, slightly different species mix because of the sound geography, easier parking, and a quieter session vibe. Rockingham has more amenities and bigger structure; Port Kennedy is the quieter alternative.
