Local Knowledge

Why locals fish this spot

North Beach Jetty is a short 22-metre fishing jetty that gives access to the reef system running through the Marmion Marine Park coastline. The pylons and nearby reef hold bait year-round, and the jetty's compact size means you're always fishing close to structure. It's a good quick-session spot for the northern suburbs — under-the-radar enough that local regulars protect it.

How to fish this spot

Drop baits along the pylon line for herring and whiting during the day. The reef nearby means you can also cast metals from the jetty toward the reef edge for tailor at dawn and dusk. Keep rigs light — the water is generally clear and fish are line-shy. Berley helps concentrate herring around the pylons. For squid, work jigs along the weed beds at dusk through spring and summer.

Common catches

Herring (reliable around the pylons), KGW and sand whiting (over sand near the jetty), tailor (dawn and dusk, reef edges), squid (Aug–Feb on jigs), garfish on calm days, and wrasse around the reef structure. Snook turn up on jigs at first light in summer.

Access and tips

Be respectful of lines and casting room. Some reef areas nearby are in Marmion Marine Park sanctuary zones where fishing is prohibited — check the boundary maps. Don't fillet on the jetty boards; gulls move fast.

Access & Conditions

Getting there

Sealed car park at North Beach foreshore reserve immediately behind the jetty. Sealed paths and the jetty itself is sealed and railed — among the more mobility-friendly fishing spots in Perth's northern suburbs. Public toilets, beach showers, cafes and a small grocery store within 200m. No formal lighting on the jetty; head torch helpful for evening sessions. Parking is generally easy outside summer weekends.

How it fishes

West-facing position with the jetty extending into the Marmion Marine Park reef system. Fishes well in most weather short of strong westerlies. Easterly mornings are calmest. Tide changes drive the bream and tailor bite; slack water is slow. Water clarity is excellent in the marine park year-round; reduces only in the days after winter storms. The compact jetty means you're always within casting distance of structure.

Hazards

Boards can be slippery in heavy dew. Marmion Marine Park sanctuary zones nearby (Boyinaboat Reef, Little Island, Lumps Sanctuary) are no-take — check boundary maps before fishing. Boat traffic is moderate during summer weekends; keep long casts clear of moving vessels. Stingrays cruise the sand around the jetty; watch your feet if you wade. Bluebottles drift in during summer northerlies.

Gear & Rigs

Herring and skippy: 7ft 6–10lb spin gear with a paternoster carrying #6 hooks, baited with prawn or maggot. KGW and sand whiting: light 4–8lb spin with a long-shank #6 paternoster on prawn or bloodworm fished over sand patches. Tailor: 9ft rod with 15–20lb braid and ganged-hook mulies or 30–40g metals at dawn and dusk. Squid: 2.0–3.0 jigs in pink, orange or natural worked along the weed edges. Light gear is enough for most species.

Seasons

Herring are year-round with summer peaks. KGW and sand whiting hold year-round on the cleaner sand patches. Tailor are most reliable autumn (March–June) at dawn and dusk. Squid run from August through February with peaks in spring and late summer. Snook are a summer first-light surface fishery. Garfish hold year-round on calm days.

If this spot's blown out

  • Trigg Beach — Walk-distance south for genuine rock platform fishing on the marine park reef.
  • Watermans Bay (Marmion Marine Park) — Drive 5 minutes north for the Marmion Marine Park rock outcrops and gutters.
  • Marmion Beach — Drive 10 minutes north for surf-and-reef beach fishing in the marine park.

Frequently Asked

Where exactly is the Marmion Marine Park sanctuary zone boundary?

Three small sanctuary zones nearby (Boyinaboat Reef, Little Island, Lumps Sanctuary) are no-take. Check the official DBCA Marmion Marine Park map before fishing — the sanctuary boundaries are marked on water by signage but should be verified before each session.

Is North Beach Jetty good for kids?

Yes — sealed and railed jetty, accessible foreshore, public toilets and amenities nearby, and a productive light-tackle fishery. Among the better family fishing spots in Perth's northern suburbs.

Can you catch squid at North Beach Jetty?

Yes — squid hold over the weed beds adjacent to the jetty from August through February. Fish 2.0–3.0 jigs in pink, orange or natural patterns slowly along the weed edges, especially at dusk and into evening.

How busy is North Beach Jetty?

Less crowded than the major Perth jetties because the structure is compact and reef areas nearby require local knowledge. Quiet enough that local regulars protect it; busy enough that you should respect lines and casting room when others are present.
