Local Knowledge
Marmion Beach sits alongside the Marmion Marine Park, and the reef patches running through this stretch of coast create structure that open sand beaches don't have. The reef edges hold herring and tailor, and the sand patches between reef are whiting territory. It's a step up from flat beach fishing without the commitment of rock platform fishing — beach access with reef-quality fishery.
Target the transition zones where sand meets reef — that's where fish patrol. Cast metals over the reef edges at dawn and dusk for herring and tailor. For whiting, use fresh bait on a light rig in the sandy gutters between reef patches. The reef provides natural berley as waves wash food off the rocks.
Herring (over reef edges, reliable), tailor (dawn and dusk, reef to sand transition), KGW and sand whiting (sandy patches), and occasional wrasse and skippy over the reef. Australian salmon push through in autumn.
Bring spare rigs because the reef will cost you hooks. The rock platforms can be slippery; fish from the sand when possible. Dawn sessions before the marine park fills with snorkellers and kayakers fish best.
Access & Conditions
Sealed car parks along West Coast Drive with multiple beach access points. Sealed paths from car park to upper beach access; not mobility-friendly to the productive reef-edge fishing positions. Public toilets at the main reserve. No formal beach lighting; head torch needed for dawn or dusk sessions. Parking is generally easy outside summer weekends.
West-facing beach with reef structure offshore that creates the productive transition zones close to shore. Fishes well in swell up to about 2.5m. Easterly mornings are calmest; afternoon Fremantle Doctor blows onshore. The reef provides some protection but not full-bay shelter; gutters between reef sections shift with swell events. Marine park water is clearer than open beaches; reduces only after winter storms.
Marmion Marine Park sanctuary zones nearby are no-take — check boundary maps before fishing. Reef sections snag gear quickly; bring spares. Slippery rocks at low tide. Big swell sets can wash anglers; stay back in heavy seas. Stingrays cruise the gutters; shuffle if you wade. Bluebottles drift in during summer northerlies. Snorkellers and kayakers use the marine park; keep long casts clear.
Gear & Rigs
Tailor and salmon: 9–11ft rod, 15–25lb braid, 25lb fluoro, 30–40g metals or ganged-hook mulies. Herring: 7ft 6–10lb spin gear with paternoster #6 hooks, fished close to reef edges. KGW and sand whiting: light 4–8lb spin with a long-shank #6 paternoster on prawn or bloodworm over sand patches. Bring spare metals — the reef snags lures.
Seasons
Australian salmon are the autumn headline (March–June). Tailor overlap with salmon season and continue through summer. Herring are year-round with summer peaks. KGW and sand whiting hold year-round on cleaner sand patches between reef. Mulloway are an occasional October–April night possibility but not a known specialist target.
If this spot's blown out
- Watermans Bay (Marmion Marine Park) — Walk-distance south for the rock outcrop and gutter fishery.
- North Beach Jetty — Drive 5 minutes south for short jetty fishing in the same marine park.
- Sorrento Beach — Drive north for the next groyne system and similar species mix.
Frequently Asked
Three small sanctuary zones (Boyinaboat Reef, Little Island, Lumps Sanctuary) are no-take and located near North Beach and Watermans Bay. Marmion Beach itself is open to normal recreational fishing. Verify boundaries on the official DBCA map before each session.
Dawn and dusk on a moving tide, March through June. Cast 30–40g metals or ganged-hook mulies across the transition zones where sand meets reef. The bigger fish hold deeper than the bread-and-butter herring water.
Yes outside the afternoon seabreeze in summer. Mornings are the productive window. Snorkellers and kayakers use the marine park during the day; keep long casts clear of moving water users.
Yes — KGW and sand whiting hold year-round on the cleaner sand patches between reef sections. Fish a long-shank #6 paternoster with prawn or bloodworm on light gear, in the sandy gaps rather than over the reef itself.
