Local Knowledge
Why locals fish this spot

Madora Bay has a reputation among locals as a mulloway beach. The gutters here tend to hold deeper than neighbouring beaches, and the water stays cleaner thanks to reef structure offshore. When conditions line up — calm, clear water at night on an incoming tide — this is one of the better land-based mulloway prospects in the metro area.

How to fish this spot

For mulloway, fish at night with fresh whole squid or live mullet on a heavy running sinker rig in the deepest gutters you can find. Keep your drag loose and be patient — jewfish don't rush. For tailor, work the gutters at dawn and dusk with metals or pilchards. The incoming tide concentrates bait and pushes fish into the gutters.

Common catches

Mulloway (the main target, historically the hot spot), tailor (good summer numbers in gutters), herring (year-round), and whiting over clean sand.

Access and tips

Mulloway fishing is a patience game — set up in a good gutter, put fresh bait out, and wait. Don't keep recasting every five minutes. If you haven't had a touch in an hour, move to the next gutter along. Fresh bait is everything; frozen squid won't cut it for jewfish.
