Local Knowledge
Madora Bay has a reputation among locals as a mulloway beach. The gutters here tend to hold deeper than neighbouring beaches, and the water stays cleaner thanks to reef structure offshore. When conditions line up — calm, clear water at night on an incoming tide — this is one of the better land-based mulloway prospects in the metro area. The beach is long and sparsely populated outside summer holidays, which is half of what makes it fish.
For mulloway, fish at night with fresh whole squid or live mullet on a heavy running sinker rig in the deepest gutters you can find. Keep your drag loose and be patient — jewfish don't rush. For tailor, work the gutters at dawn and dusk with metals or pilchards. The incoming tide concentrates bait and pushes fish into the gutters. Walk the beach before setting up; the productive gutters move with each significant swell event.
Mulloway (the main target, historically the hot spot), tailor (good summer numbers in gutters), herring (year-round), Australian salmon when autumn schools push through, and whiting over clean sand. Skippy in the wash close to the rocks.
Mulloway fishing is a patience game — set up in a good gutter, put fresh bait out, and wait. Don't keep recasting every five minutes. If you haven't had a touch in an hour, move to the next gutter along. Fresh bait is everything; frozen squid won't cut it for jewfish. Don't leave gear unattended; opportunistic theft is a known issue at remote beach access points.
Access & Conditions
Sealed car park at the Madora Bay foreshore; smaller parking pockets along Tassels Place and Madora Bay Road give access to other beach sections. The walk from car park to beach is short but the soft sand walk to productive gutters is not mobility-friendly. Public toilets at the main foreshore. No formal beach lighting; head torch is essential for night sessions. Parking is easy outside summer weekends and school holidays.
West-facing ocean beach exposed to SW swell but partially protected by reef structure offshore that keeps the inshore water cleaner than neighbouring beaches. Fishes well in swell up to about 2.5m. Easterly mornings are calmest; afternoon sea breezes are onshore. The gutters reshape after each significant swell event. Water clarity is generally good — outstanding by metro beach standards because of the reef protection.
Big swell sets can wash anglers in low gutters; stay back in heavy seas. Stingrays cruise the gutters; shuffle if you wade. Bluebottles drift in during summer northerlies. Sharks transit the area but have not historically affected fishing safety. Soft sand walking with heavy gear is tiring — pack light, water, and a beach cart if you're doing a long session. Mosquitoes and sandflies at dawn and dusk; pack repellent.
Gear & Rigs
Mulloway: 10–12kg setup, 30–50lb braid, 60–80lb leader, 4–6 oz running sinker on a 6/0 hook with whole fresh squid or live mullet. Tailor: 9–11ft rod, 15–25lb braid, ganged-hook mulies or 30–40g metals at dawn and dusk. Herring: 7ft 6–10lb spin gear with a paternoster carrying #6 hooks, fished tight to the gutter edges. Salmon (autumn): same heavy tailor rig works fine; metals on a fast retrieve through the schools.
Seasons
Mulloway are year-round but most reliable October through April at night with the strongest run typically peaking around November. Tailor fish best November through March. Australian salmon push through in autumn (March–June). Herring are year-round with autumn peaks. Whiting hold year-round on the cleaner sandy patches. Mulloway anglers fish the new and full moon phases as the most consistent.
If this spot's blown out
- San Remo Beach — Walk-distance south for similar gutter fishing with a strong tailor reputation.
- Halls Head — Drive south for the rocky-and-sand mix with reliable bread-and-butter species.
- Secret Harbour — Drive north for the deeper channels with a stronger reef structure.
Frequently Asked
The gutters hold deeper than most metro beaches and the offshore reef keeps the inshore water cleaner. The combination of depth, structure, water clarity and remote night-time access makes it one of the better land-based jewfish prospects on the Perth–Mandurah coast.
October through April at night, with the strongest run typically in November. Fish around the new and full moon phases on an incoming tide for the most consistent action. Patience is essential; jewfish don't rush bait.
Yes — herring, tailor and whiting fish well during the day, particularly at dawn and dusk. Mulloway is essentially a night fishery here so daytime sessions target the bread-and-butter species.
Generally yes but the beach is remote at night and gear theft is a known issue at remote access points. Tell someone your plans, fish with a friend if you can, and don't leave gear unattended.
