Local Knowledge

Why locals fish this spot

Horrocks is a quiet coastal town 74 km north of Geraldton and 22 km west of Northampton, filling the long gap between Geraldton and Kalbarri on the mid-west coast. A fringing reef sits a short paddle offshore, breaking up the swell and creating a sheltered lagoon that fishes for tailor, whiting and mulloway through most weather. The town has a single caravan park, a small foreshore with a public jetty and fish-cleaning bay, and a beach that runs north toward Little Bay (the original Whaleboat Cove) and south toward Geraldton. Five hours from Perth on the Brand Highway and Northampton–Horrocks Road.

How to fish this spot

Walk the beach gutters either side of the jetty for tailor, salmon and the occasional mulloway — ganged mulies into the wash at change of light is the bread-and-butter approach. The jetty itself fishes for herring, skippy, garfish and squid year-round on light gear and a paternoster. Inside the reef, sand-flat sections produce sand whiting and tarwhine on prawn or pipi through summer. North reef and south reef rocks at the ends of the bay take pink snapper and bigger tailor on whole bait when the swell is low. After dark, deeper gutters in the lagoon hold mulloway on whole mulies or live herring.

Common catches

Tailor through the autumn run, mulloway year-round with summer peaks, herring, skippy, tarwhine, sand whiting and squid year-round. Salmon push through in autumn alongside the tailor. Pink snapper from the reef edges and rock platforms in the cooler months. The back of the reef holds dhufish and baldchin groper for boat anglers, both subject to West Coast demersal closure rules.

Access and tips

The reef is shallow enough to wade at low tide for prawns and a look at the rock pools, but it is sharp limestone and reef cuts get infected fast. The fish-cleaning bay at the foreshore takes the mess out of the campsite — use it. Northampton is the nearest fuel and supplies stop heading east; the closest tackle is in Geraldton. There is no boat ramp at Horrocks proper — beach launch only.

Access & Conditions

Getting there

Sealed road from Perth via the Brand Highway, North West Coastal Highway and Northampton–Horrocks Road, around 5 hours total. Sealed foreshore parking at the jetty with public toilets, picnic tables and a fish-cleaning bay. The caravan park sits a block back from the foreshore. Walking access along the foreshore is sealed and partially mobility-friendly, with soft-sand walks to the productive northern and southern beach gutters. No formal boat ramp — beach launches off the foreshore in calm conditions only. Geraldton hospital and the Northampton medical centre are the nearest health services.

How it fishes

West-facing exposed coast with a fringing reef breaking up the worst of the swell. The sheltered lagoon inside the reef fishes through most weather; the open beach beyond the reef sets up quickly on a south-westerly blow. Easterly mornings are the calmest window. Afternoon south-westerly seabreeze runs hard most summer days. The Leeuwin Current pushes warm water down this coast in autumn and winter and brings the occasional tropical stray. Water clarity inside the reef stays high in calm conditions and drops fast after a blow.

Hazards

Reef cuts on the limestone fringe get infected fast — wear booties if wading and treat any cut promptly. The lagoon is shallow but the open beach beyond the reef has rip currents through the gutters, particularly around the northern and southern ends of the bay. White sharks have been recorded along this coast, including off Geraldton; the bait push that draws mulloway also draws sharks. Mobile coverage is patchy outside the town centre. The drive from Perth is long enough to warrant a fuel stop at Northampton or Geraldton — neither is open late.

Gear & Rigs

Tailor and salmon from the beach: 10–12 ft rod, 20–30 lb braid, 30 lb fluoro, ganged 5/0 mulies or 40–60 g metals. Mulloway: 12 ft surf rod, 30 lb braid, 50 lb leader and a 6/0 single on a running sinker baited with whole mulies or live herring. Jetty bread-and-butter: 7 ft 6–10 lb spin with a paternoster of #6 long-shanks on prawn or mulie strip. Squid: 2.5–3.0 jigs over the weed and reef edges. Pink snapper from the rocks: 15 kg gear with whole squid or fillet bait on a calm forecast.

Seasons

Tailor are the autumn headline (March–June) along the open beach gutters. Salmon push through in autumn alongside the tailor. Mulloway are year-round with the warmer months and the autumn shoulder producing the most consistent night sessions. Sand whiting and tarwhine peak through summer (October–April). Pink snapper are reliable through the cooler months from the reef rocks. Horrocks sits in the West Coast Bioregion, so the September 2027 demersal closure window applies to pink snapper, dhufish and the broader demersal mixed bag — verify current DPIRD dates before targeting any of those.

Frequently Asked

Is the Horrocks jetty still standing?

Yes. The jetty is in service as a recreational fishing platform with a fish-cleaning bay nearby on the foreshore. It is a smaller community jetty rather than a heritage timber structure — light gear for herring, skippy, garfish and squid is the right setup. Verify current condition with the caravan park or Shire of Northampton before relying on it for a heavy session.

Does the West Coast demersal closure apply at Horrocks?

Yes. Horrocks sits in the West Coast Bioregion, so pink snapper, dhufish and the broader demersal mixed bag are subject to the September 2027 closure window and the wider West Coast rules. Boat anglers fishing the back of the reef for dhufish and baldchin groper need to verify the current DPIRD dates and limits before each trip.

How long is the drive from Perth?

Around 5 hours via the Brand Highway, North West Coastal Highway and Northampton–Horrocks Road. The last 22 km from Northampton is a sealed back road. Long-weekend trips are common; a three or four day stay makes most sense given the species variety and the chance of weather days.

Can I launch a boat at Horrocks?

Not from a formal ramp. Beach launches off the foreshore are common in calm conditions but require a 4WD and a boat trailer set up for soft-sand work. The closest formal ramps are at Geraldton south and Kalbarri north — Port Gregory has a foreshore jetty but no formal trailer ramp. Most Horrocks-based fishing is land-based or kayak-launched inside the reef.
