Local Knowledge
Geraldton is the northern end of Perth's long-weekend fishing orbit — 4.5 hours up the coast where the Leeuwin Current blurs the line between temperate and tropical. You can target a dhufish one morning and have a coral trout turn up on the next cast. Fisherman's Wharf and the marina give working-port land-based access for tailor, mulloway, herring and whiting; Separation Point is a classic rock/beach spot that fires on the incoming tide; Drummond Cove north of town is clear-water beach fishing for herring, tailor and mulloway.
Fisherman's Wharf / marina: light baits for herring, skippy and whiting; squid jigs after dark along the lit sections; heavier gear with mulies, mullet or soft plastics at the deeper wharf edges for tailor and mulloway. Separation Point: fish the incoming tide at dawn or dusk — metal slugs for tailor, heavier baits for mulloway and pink snapper off the deeper ledges. Drummond Cove: classic beach spin through clear water — mix small lures and berley for herring, step up for tailor and beach-cast pinkies in cooler months.
Tailor, mulloway, herring, skippy, sand whiting and tarwhine (all the land-based bread-and-butter), squid around the marina at night, pink snapper from rock edges in the legal window, samson fish and summer kingfish for the ambitious.
Fisherman's Wharf is a working port — watch for vessel movement and don't cast across shipping lanes. Separation Point rocks get swell-washed; grippy shoes, watch sets, don't fish alone at night. Drummond Cove parking fills fast on summer weekends.
Access & Conditions
Multiple sealed car parks at Fisherman's Wharf, the marina precinct, Separation Point and Drummond Cove. Sealed paths and platforms at the wharf and marina — partial mobility access. Public toilets, cafes, restaurants, supermarkets, fuel and tackle shops throughout the town. Lighting at Fisherman's Wharf and marina is excellent for night fishing. Caravan parks and accommodation in town. The drive from Perth is around 4.5 hours up the Brand Highway.
West-facing position with the Leeuwin Current pushing warmer water through year-round. Temperate-tropical crossover means species variety. The Houtman Abrolhos Islands offshore protect parts of the coastline from worst swell. Easterly mornings are calmest. Strong southerly summer winds (the local 'Geraldton Doctor') blow most afternoons. Water clarity at Drummond Cove and the open coast is generally excellent; the working port at Fisherman's Wharf is naturally turbid.
Boat-based recreational demersal fishing in the West Coast Bioregion (Kalbarri to Augusta) is in extended recovery closure to September 2027 — verify current land-based rules and species closures with DPIRD before targeting snapper, dhufish or other demersals. Working port at Fisherman's Wharf has constant vessel movement; keep lines clear of shipping lanes. Separation Point rocks get swell-washed; grippy shoes, watch sets, don't fish alone at night. The Leeuwin Current can bring tropical species and strong currents inshore unexpectedly. Sharks transit the area but have not historically affected fishing safety.
Gear & Rigs
Bread-and-butter at the wharf: 7ft 6–10lb spin gear with paternoster #6 hooks. Squid: 2.5–3.0 jigs along the lit marina walls at night. Tailor and mulloway: 9–11ft rod with 15–25lb braid, 25–30lb fluoro, ganged-hook mulies or 30–40g metals. Pink snapper from Separation Point: 10–12kg gear with whole fresh squid or large bait fillets on a 5/0 single hook running rig. Samson fish and kingfish: 15kg gear with live baits or large fresh-dead baits.
Seasons
Pink snapper were historically a cooler-months target (May–September) outside the annual mid-Oct to mid-Dec demersal closure; boat-based recreational demersal fishing is now in extended recovery closure to September 2027 — verify current rules with DPIRD. Tailor and salmon are reliable autumn (March–June). Mulloway are year-round with peaks late summer through autumn. Squid runs August–February. Yellowtail kingfish and Spanish mackerel are summer warm-water visitors (Dec–April). Bread-and-butter species year-round.
If this spot's blown out

- Lancelin (Jetty & Back Beach) — Drive 3 hours south for the closer-to-Perth destination with established lagoon/jetty fishery.
- Seabird — Drive south for quiet beach fishing on the way back to Perth.
Frequently Asked
Pink snapper are a genuine land-based possibility from Separation Point and the wharf in the legal window — rare south of here. Spanish mackerel and yellowtail kingfish push past in summer when warm Leeuwin Current water arrives. Coral trout and other tropical species occasionally turn up.
Boat-based recreational demersal fishing in the West Coast Bioregion (Kalbarri to Augusta) is in extended recovery closure to September 2027 — the historical mid-Oct to mid-Dec annual closure has been replaced. Always verify current land-based rules and species closures with DPIRD before targeting pink snapper, dhufish, baldchin groper or other demersals.
Around 4.5 hours up the Brand Highway. The route via Indian Ocean Drive (through Lancelin and Jurien Bay) is slower but more scenic. Long-weekend trips are common; multi-day stays make most sense for the species variety.
Separation Point during the incoming tide, particularly at dawn or dusk in the cooler months (May–September outside the demersal closure). Heavy gear, fresh whole squid or large bait fillets, and patience — pinkies don't rush.
