Local Knowledge
Falcon Bay sits between Halls Head and Dawesville, protected by an outer reef that creates a natural lagoon effect. The deep channel running parallel to the beach holds fish even when the open coast is unfishable. It's one of the more consistent spots south of Perth because the reef takes the brunt of the swell. The combination of reef shelter and channel structure means you can fish quality water on days that would shut neighbouring beaches down.
Target the deep channel where it runs closest to the beach — you can spot it as a darker band in the water. Cast baits or metals across the channel and work them back through the current. For mulloway, fish the channel at night with fresh squid or live bait on the bottom. Tailor patrol the channel edges at dawn and dusk. For whiting, fish the cleaner sandy patches between reef sections on light gear with prawn or bloodworm.
Tailor (strong summer numbers), mulloway (peak Nov, channel at night), herring, KGW and sand whiting over the sandy patches, and Australian salmon when the autumn schools push through. Skippy in the wash close to the rocks. Garfish in the calmer corners.
The channel shifts slightly with sand movement, so what worked last month might be 20m further along. Walk and look before committing to a spot. Don't fish over the reef sections with expensive lures; bring spare metals. The reef protection is genuine but doesn't extend to gale conditions.
Access & Conditions
Sealed car parks at multiple foreshore access points along Old Coast Road and Falcon Avenue. Beach access is short but the soft sand walk to productive channel sections is not mobility-friendly. Public toilets and showers at the main foreshore. No formal beach lighting; head torch essential for night sessions. Parking is generally easy outside summer holidays.
West-facing ocean beach but the offshore reef breaks the worst of incoming SW swell, creating a calmer near-shore zone than neighbouring beaches. Fishes well in conditions that shut down Halls Head and Madora Bay. Easterly mornings are calmest. The reef-induced channel shifts with sand movement so spot quality moves through the year. Water clarity is generally good and stays cleaner during swell events thanks to the reef.
Reef sections snag gear quickly; bring spares and keep retrieves shallow. Slippery rocks at low tide; watch footing. Big swell in storm conditions overpowers the reef shelter; don't assume Falcon is fishable in any weather. Stingrays cruise the channel; shuffle if you wade. Bluebottles drift in during summer northerlies. Sharks transit the area but have not historically affected fishing safety.
Gear & Rigs
Tailor: 9–10ft rod, 15–25lb braid, 25lb fluoro, ganged-hook mulies or 30–40g metals worked across the channel. Mulloway: 10–12kg setup with 4–6 oz running sinker and whole fresh squid or live mullet. Herring: 7ft 6–10lb spin gear with a paternoster carrying #6 hooks, fished close to the channel edges. KGW and sand whiting: light 4–8lb spin with a long-shank #6 paternoster on prawn or bloodworm over sandy patches. Salmon (autumn): heavy tailor gear with 30–40g metals on a fast retrieve.
Seasons
Tailor are the summer mainstay (Nov–Mar) with strong numbers in the channel. Mulloway peak in November with the channel at night the prime setup. Australian salmon push through in autumn (March–June). Herring are year-round with autumn peaks. KGW and sand whiting hold year-round on the cleaner sand patches. The reef protection extends the fishable season beyond what neighbouring beaches manage.
If this spot's blown out
- Halls Head — Walk-distance north for ocean-side beach gutters when the channel is quiet.
- Dawesville Cut — Drive 5 minutes south for high-current fishing when you want to chase mulloway specifically.
- Madora Bay — Drive 10 minutes north for the known mulloway-night beach.
Frequently Asked
An offshore reef breaks the worst of incoming SW swell, creating a calmer near-shore zone than neighbouring beaches. When Halls Head and Madora Bay are washed out, Falcon often still fishes the channel.
Look for a darker band of water running roughly parallel to the beach — that's the deep channel. Position changes with sand movement, so walk the beach and visually scout before setting up.
November through March, with the strongest sessions at dawn and dusk. The channel concentrates bait and tailor stack along the edges; cast metals across and work them back through.
Yes — the deep channel holds mulloway at night, with November the peak month. Fresh whole squid or live mullet on heavy gear in the deepest channel sections is the standard approach. Patience is essential.
