Albany is Perth's Southern Ocean alternative — five hours south-east into a different bioregion, different swell regime, and different fish. King George Sound is the classic sheltered sound fishery that gave the species its name; Emu Point channel funnels Oyster Harbour in and out with current to fish; Salmon Holes is the iconic surf beach where the autumn salmon schools pile up. Rock platforms east of town produce tailor, snapper and salmon when the swell behaves — and a healthy respect for Southern Ocean sets is not optional.
Emu Point channel: cast into the current from the rocks for herring, garfish, whiting, skippy, squid and the occasional samson — light to medium gear, berley helps. King George Sound: kayak or boat if possible, land-based from the old town jetty and rock walls for King George whiting, squid and pink snapper. Salmon Holes: time the autumn run (Mar–Jul on this coast) and spin metal slugs into the schools as they pile along the beach — big waves make conditions fickle. Rock platforms east of town (Cable Beach and on): heavier gear for tailor, snapper, and salmon when conditions allow.
King George whiting (signature — sound and sand/weed edges), herring, skippy, garfish, squid, flathead (year-round bread-and-butter), Australian salmon (the Salmon Holes headline, Mar–Jul migration), tailor, sand whiting, and from the rocks: pink snapper, samson fish, mulloway.
Southern Ocean is the real danger — Salmon Holes and the rock platforms have killed people. Never fish alone, always watch sets, wear a life jacket for rocks, and honour the big-water rules. Albany sits in the South Coast Bioregion, not West Coast — demersal rules differ from everywhere else on this site; check DPIRD before targeting snapper or dhufish. Weather changes fast — have a plan B in the sound if the coast blows out.
