Yanchep Lagoon is arguably one of the most productive shore fishing spots in the Perth metro area. The lagoon is protected by an outer reef that creates a natural fish trap — bait schools up in the calm water, tailor and whiting patrol the reefy edges, and the whole setup fishes like a country spot that happens to be 30 minutes from the CBD.
Cast metal slugs and poppers over the reefy patches for tailor — they sit in ambush around the reef edges and smash anything that looks like fleeing bait. For whiting, use small poppers or minnow lures worked over the sand between reef patches. The lagoon's protected nature means lighter tackle and smaller lures work better than heavy surf gear.
Tailor (strong numbers over the reef, the main draw), whiting (sand patches between reef, reliable), herring, and occasional salmon when autumn schools reach this far north.
The lagoon's reputation is well-earned, so it does get fishing pressure — especially on weekends. Fish dawn or dusk weekdays for the best experience. During abalone season, licensed abalone fishing is popular here. The reef provides natural berley, so you don't need to bring your own. Walk the lagoon to find the most active section.
