South Beach is a wide stretch of sand just south of Fremantle that catches swell from the west and forms gutters and holes after decent seas. It's an underrated surf fishing spot because most people drive past it to reach the moles or Ammo Jetty, which means less pressure and more fish per angler.
Walk the beach at low tide and look for gutters carved by recent swell — darker water, breaks in wave pattern, or channels draining between sandbars. Fish these features with fresh bait on a running sinker or cast metals through on the retrieve. Dawn is the best window before the sea breeze kicks in.
Herring (year-round in gutters), tailor (autumn runs at dawn and dusk), Australian salmon (Mar–Jun when schools move through), and whiting in clean sandy gutters.
South Beach is close to Fremantle, so it's a good option for a quick session before or after work. The beach faces west and cops the afternoon sea breeze hard — morning sessions are almost always better. If the gutters are flat and featureless, try another day.
