Local Knowledge
Why locals fish this spot

Falcon Bay sits between Halls Head and Dawesville, protected by an outer reef that creates a natural lagoon effect. The deep channel running parallel to the beach holds fish even when the open coast is unfishable. It's one of the more consistent spots south of Perth because the reef takes the brunt of the swell.

How to fish this spot

Target the deep channel where it runs closest to the beach — you can spot it as a darker band in the water. Cast baits or metals across the channel and work them back through the current. For mulloway, fish the channel at night with fresh squid or live bait on the bottom. Tailor patrol the channel edges at dawn and dusk.

Common catches

Tailor (strong summer numbers), mulloway (peak Nov, channel at night), herring, whiting over the sandy patches, and Australian salmon when the autumn schools push through.

Access and tips

The reef protection means this spot fishes when others don't — keep it in mind for rough weather days. The channel shifts slightly with sand movement, so what worked last month might be 20m further along. Walk and look before committing to a spot.
