Is Wilson Inlet really that good for black bream?

Yes. Wilson Inlet is one of the recognised south-coast bream estuaries, with quality fish year-round through the Hay River arm, the Denmark River and the deeper inlet snag lines. Light gear, small presentations and clean casts to structure are the local approach. The bar phase — open or closed — shifts the fish around the inlet but does not shut the fishery down.

When does the Wilson Inlet bar open?

Most years the sandbar is opened mechanically through Ocean Beach (typically July or August) to mitigate flooding around the inlet edges; the bar then naturally closes again from late summer. The post-opening week tends to concentrate bream at the bar and lets salmon push into the inlet on the rising tide. Timing varies — check the Shire of Denmark before planning around it.

Does the West Coast demersal closure apply at Denmark?

No. Denmark sits in the South Coast Bioregion, which has its own bag and size structure for demersal scalefish and is not subject to the West Coast September 2027 closure. Verify current South Coast Bioregion rules with DPIRD before targeting pink snapper, dhufish or other demersals.

Can I fish at Greens Pool?

No. Greens Pool and the surrounding waters in William Bay National Park have been closed to fishing since 2018 and the area is a no-take sanctuary zone. The fish life has rebounded and it is now a snorkelling and swimming site rather than a fishery. Lights Beach to the east and Ocean Beach to the south of town are the open-coast options.
